Unable to Add Data Connection

  I am receiving the following error when I try to add a new database connection via the server explorer - data connections. 
  
  "Unable to add data connection. Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned to a call from a COM component".  I have an old connection to an Oracle Database that is not valid anymore. I do not know if that is causing the error.  I cannot expand the data connections to modify or delete the old connection. 
  
  How do I resolve this error and remove the invalid connection?
