I have an external disk drive I use to sync two laptops.
what is the best practice to ensure the files between the two laptops are always up-to-date?

Hi -
You can install SyncToy on the two laptops. And create a folder pair on each of them pointing to the external disk drive. You should then be able to keep the two lapttops in sync.
