Illegal copy of windows RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have encountered this problem several times and have resolved it by restoring to an older copy of the system, This time however the restore does not seem to have worked. Immediately after the restore the system was ok but failed again on reboot.

The computer is a Toshiba Satellite running a pre-installed version of Vista Home Premium and except for any updates made available in the last few days (These have been rolled back) is patched up to date. The COA shows the manufacturers name - Toshiba

This particular problem is made worse by the fact that I have no access to the operating system (no desktop, start button ctrl alt del etc) so I cannot follow some of the recommended procedures to identify potential solutions.

The diagnostic report is shown below

    Please help

  • Good Morning Ticklebug,

In your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report, you will notice that under the "File Scan Data-->" line there are a large number of files that are listed as "Mismatched". All those files are Critical Windows Vista System files. Normally, when there is one or two Mismatched files, it means that those files have been tampered or have become corrupted in some way. But in your case the MGADT report is indicating that ALL your Critical Windows Vista System files are Tampered or Corrupted. This is highly unlikely. What is more likely is that your System Catalog has been tampered or corrupted. The System Catalog stores all the Signatures Hashes (fingerprints) for all the Critical Windows Vista System files. One of the things that Windows Vista uses the System Catalog for is to identify if a file has been tampered or corrupted because if the file had been modified, it's signature hash would not match what is listed in the System Catalog and in which case, Windows Vista would flag itself as Non-Genuine (as it has done, in your case).

I highly recommend that you repair Windows Vista using System Restore:

    1. Reboot Vista into Safe Mode
    2. Go to Control Panel
    3. Click on Classic View located on the left hand side of the Control panel window
    4. Double-click Backup and Restore Center
    5. On the left hand side of the window, click Repair Windows using System Restore
    6. Put a check in the box that says Show restore points older than 5 day

    7. Select Choose Different Restore Point select the restore point that corresponds to a date before you first experienced the issue.
    8. Click the Next button.
    9. Reboot back into Normal mode
    10. Run the MGADT again and paste the results into Notepad or Word doc and scroll down to the "File Scan Data-->" line.

11a)     If there are any Mismatched files listed, they you will need to restore to a point further in the past.
11b)     If there are No Mismatched files listed, then your Windows Vista should report as Genuine.

If the above steps do not resolve your issue, your other options are to either reinstall Vista or contact Windows Vista support below:

  • Good Morning Ticklebug,

In your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report, you will notice that under the "File Scan Data-->" line there are a large number of files that are listed as "Mismatched". All those files are Critical Windows Vista System files. Normally, when there is one or two Mismatched files, it means that those files have been tampered or have become corrupted in some way. But in your case the MGADT report is indicating that ALL your Critical Windows Vista System files are Tampered or Corrupted. This is highly unlikely.
