Pre-loaded xp software in other country RRS feed

  • Question

  • We purchased an Acer laptop in Bangkok and this was preloaded with Windows XP in the store at the time of purchase.  We were not provided with a disc or validation key.  This was in October last year, and we have today started getting the "non genuine software" messages from Microsoft.  We have called the Microsoft helpline who advised we needed the product key which we do not have so they cannot help us.  We purchased the laptop from a genuine Acer retail store in Bangkok.   Is there anything we can do to resolve this issue, or do we need to purchase a new version of XP.   Thank you for your assistance.

  • Hello andamg,

All large computer manufacturers, that sell Windows Pre-installed on the computers that they build, are required to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker on the side or bottom of the computer.  The COA includes the name (and Product Key) of the version of Windows that came pre-installed and is Licensed for that computer.

In your Post you say that the Windows was installed at the Store? Then it's not a Pre-installed copy of Windows. Pre-installed version of Windows (known as as OEM SLP version) are installed on the computer at the Factorey, not at  the time of purchase. In addition, most computers (especially laptops) come from the factory with some sort of Operating System installed (Windows, Linux or whatever).

I recommend contacting Acer and a) confirming that the Laptop was, in fact, built by them and if so b) find out what Operating System is licensed to run on that computer and if they can provide replacment software and/or the Genuine Product Key.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
    Darin MS
