Options when building WHS server containing two identical drives? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am getting ready to build a new WHS that will have two identical internal 500gb Western Digital SATA drives. I was wondering whether or not it would be a good idea to do a RAID 1 mirror. Or should I leave the secondary drive alone and let WHS manage it?

My goal is not so much increased storage (the 500gb is plenty for this server) but rather for fail-over purposes.

    Thanks!

  • RAID is an unsupported technology for Windows Home Server. You'll probably be able to get it to work, however it will complicate any server recovery scenario to have your system partition on a RAID array. Since by design anything on the system partition is either sacrificial (the OS, for example) or easily recreated (users), you shouldn't worry about loss of the system partition, so you should let Windows Home Server have the second disk to manage as part of the storage pool.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
