Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of windows not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just got this message (or rather just saw it) in the bottom corner of my computer today, after having problems with a very slow startup (sometimes 15 minutes) over the past 3 weeks. I did purchase the computer used off ebay over a year ago. All help appreciated.

  • Unfortunately, someone installed a Windows 7 Professional Enterprise version on the Dell computer.  You'll need to remove that copy of Windows 7 by reformatting the hard drive and then install the correct version of Windows 7 which you can obtain by contacting Dell Support.  See: Request Dell Backup Discs

  • You are using a volume license copy of Windows.

    Windows Product ID Type: 6
    Windows License Type: Volume MAK

There is no way to legitimately sell a volume license copy of Windows on a computer on ebay.  Volume license copies are not transferrable.

By itself, the licensing problem would not cause the poor performance you are getting but you do need to replace the copy of Windows as well.  I suggest you download the hard drive manufacturer's disk diagnostics and check the hard drive.

You can order recovery disks for your make and model from Dell or a third party like Recovery-Disks.com and restore the computer to the version of Windows 7 it originally shipped with or purchase a full license copy of Windows 7.

Do not buy Windows 7 on eBay, the Amazon Marketplace, or any discount website.  The web is full of excellent counterfeits that appear OK for a couple of months but Microsoft eventually blocks the product keys once the abuse is detected.  Do not buy Windows from an individual.  Only buy from the Microsoft Store, Amazon Corp., or a well-known Microsoft partner.
