How do you get rid of adbutler (virus/spyware)?  It causes ads in certain websites to be redirected to obscene advertisements.  I want it to go away.  Does Windows Live OneCare have the capability to do this?

  • We were able to solve the problem!  When we went to the Windows Live Safety Scanner page, the same kind of undesirable advertisements came up in their ad box.  But this time there was a remove ad button.  When we clicked on that button it told us that a guitar effects program (guitarfx) that we had downloaded had this effect on ad boxes.  We were just trying to get some cool sounds for our guitar, but we got a heck of a lot of trouble instead!  Anyway thank you for getting us to look in another direction.  It sure beats installing yet another spyware software that doesn't seem to do the job.

  • I don't know if One Care removes this but you can try the online Windows Live Safety Scanner - http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

  • We already subscribe to Windows Live OneCare and it can't seem to find the adbutler problem on our computer. Yet when we run trial virus scans, they clearly identify that we have adbutler problems.  We tried to use this windows live safety scanner link, but it won't install it.  We are assuming that is because we already have the software.  Is the safety scanner part of the Windows Live OneCare program that we already have?
