  • Hello Adam,

Thank you for visiting out forum today :-). Unfortunately I do not have any solution around the error which you are experiencing. The error code, "0x800402c9" which you are experiencing indicates the pre-existing Geographically blocked PID Windows is too corrupt for the product key tool to work. You will need to wait for the WGA Kit to arrive. Next you will need to completely reinstall Windows XP along with all the Service Packs and service patches. Please make sure that you back up all of your data prior to performing a system reinstallation.

    Take care Adam,

    Stephen

  • Hello AdamsySpokes,

I understand that you are encountering the "Windows Product Key Update Failure - disk-write error 0x800402c9" error when attempting to update a nongenuine installation of Windows XP to genuine using a Product Key and WGA Kit that you purchased online directy from Microsoft.

Unless Stephen Holm of Microsoft has better information, I am unaware of a resolution to this exact error message when received under your circumstances.  If you search this forum you see that the error message does occasionally appear, but I have never seen a fix for it.

Again, unless Stephen can provide a "bail out"  :-)  for this error, the only solution is to wait for your genuine XP CDROM to arrive in the mail, then backup your valuable data and use the CD to do a clean installation of XP Pro.
