Reinstall XP not validated... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Typical Crash drive issue... replace drive... attempt to restore backup file (w/OS)

Decided to restore Backup copy of disk w/ OS (Norton Ghost 9.0)... (various approaches using MS/Norton's recovery methods, etc.)

I have been trying to recovery data w/original OS on original computer for over a weak now... all installs fail for various reasons (side note: good thing about this effort to restore a HD using backups - I am learning a lot about error messages and blue screens - among those learning lessons are 1) one is that blue screens are useless when they flash for millisecond and that error codes tell you little if anything of substance... but, they are neat job justification for MS software engineers. 2) I probably bogged down their server with the number of error messages I have sent to MS).

At any rate - I digress, after MANY attempts to recovery data/reinstall WinXP with original OS, I give up an try a clean install (again)... only problem...

Now I have to call in to validate OS software (which I have owned on the same machine for the past 4+ yrs).  The MS/foreign call center, validates the software...

I reboot... validation doesn't work... it will not let me update to SP2 or any other updates.

This is a pain... any suggestions besides probably the best option - ...moving to Linux.
