After windows updates, everytime I boot on the computer it says my windows is not genuine. error 0x8004fe21 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, I have a custom built pc that I built myself. It has ran fine for years now with no issue. I used a genuine copy of windows 7 i purchased new from newegg. However, after my pc downloaded some updates last night everytime I power on the computer it gives me the error code 0x8004fe21. However, in system properties it still shows my windows as activated. This is quite the annoying error so I would greatly appreciate any advice on removing this issue.

  • There were problems with one of yesterday's updates - KB3004394

If you uninstall it, that may cure the problem

  • Thank you for the quick reply, sadly though, uninstalling this update did not fix the error as after 3 restarts it continues to show.

  • I had this issue after last night, I called earlier today and they told me to run the "slui 3" from the command prompt. I did that, re-entered my product key, and it said successfully activated, the control panel showed genuine, etc.

Couple hours later I get the same "this product is not genuine popup" and I call back, I spoke to someone different and he said microsoft is aware of the problems and should have it fixed soon. (He said there's nothing wrong with our product keys, or our windows, it's just a bug they're dealing with)

He said he knew the popups were annoying but that they would be gone soon, so I guess just bear with it for a bit.

  • That report shows the issue as being resolved.

MS have since changed their advice on this patch....

    See the notes in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3004394
    - it is not advised to uninstall the update if already installed as it may
    cause other issues.

    MS have since
released a new patch designed to resolve the issues caused bythe failed patch..
