Question
-
I have win xp sp2.
I am asked to apply security patches (there are 3 of them) to a fresh XP install, and when I do I get the following error after reboot (this has happened 3 times now):
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: user32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.3099 Offset: 0001d3df
If I run sp/ scannow, it fixes the problem, but then automatic update runs and the security updates corrupt explorer.exe or user32.dll. I have tried just replacing those files but it does not work
Any ideas?

Ashanley,
Please run the MGA Diag Tool and follow the directions for pasting the results back in this same thread. This will help us analyze what you are experiencing so we may provide you with a resolution or point you in a direction to seek help.
Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.
Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.
Should the problem which you are experiencing reside with Windows Updates it would fall outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide some information which may help. Should you experience problems while updating Windows please follow the Help and Support links on the Windows Updates page. Here you will find assistance in solving the Windows Updates difficulties. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are located here: http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us which may address questions you have. You have a Volume licensed version of Windows – you would be best off contacting your System Administrator for assistance, if you are a member of a corporate network. If you are not such a member then your installation is non-genuine.Your installation of Office is non-genuine.Your actual query would be best asked in the IE Answers forums, as it appears to have nothing to do with WGA
