Virus and spyware definitions do not update RRS feed

  • Question

  • WOC Beta 2.0 Status has gone red with message virus and spyware definition files are out-of-date. Reboot and try again to update do not fix problem.

Second time this has happened. The first was after WOC was automatically updated to Beta 2.0. Support provided a fix update at that time but I don't remember where the file came from.

I am running Vista Ultimate and the same thing happened on my XP machine after the update.

Anybody know where the fix is?

    Thanks,

    John

  • John, if you are using the 2.0 beta, the only way that your definitions can be out of date are if your computer date and time are wrong - unless of course you've encountered a bug. The beta was only released last week and OneCare turns red only if it can't update definitions in about 10 days.

  • Looks like I'm gonna have this problem every week.  Last time I used System Restore, launched the update only to find it was already up to date.  It seems the program is up to date, but just can't come out of alert status.  I have this problem on my old xp machine too, but that machine had been so narffed up by Norton 360 I've given up on it.  The problem with Live One Care is merely irratating, and Microsoft should have already produced a reasonable fix for it.  The CashDelete fix hasn't worked for me.  I hope Windows has made a restore point since the last time I installed a program.  There's nothing like driving brads with a sledge hammer!

  • After a System Restore it usually takes about 48 hours or so for One Care to return to green status.

  • Installed Windows live OneCare recently and everything was working just right untill the red balloon appeared saying :

windows live onecare cannot update etc. (a required update for windows live onecare etc...) after clicking this balloon

i  tried everything the "get help" link said but it didnt work. (yes everything : the repair tool, uninstall, reinstall, restore, managing firewall restrictions; even put down my firewall, edit reg. keys just everything BUT nothing worked)

the tune up seems to run normally but it hangs when the update is being executed.

Also windows defender seems to conflict with windows live onecare and wants to close and restart my computer for the protection of my system. (i did tried that too: 8 restarts)

The activation button says that the trial will expire in 200 + days so that shouldnt give any problems.

Security center just keeps giving me the message that the virus and spyware definitions are out of date, when i try updating them it hangs and the red balloon to the "get help" link appears.

I have encountered problems before with automatic updates (which are resolved) so i guess my previous anti virus software (avg) wasnt to happy with me un-installing it; well; so it seems.

Nevertheless, this problem is not going away anytime soon. (yes even after staying online for 48 hours or 10 days)

solution anyone ? Because on other computers there is no problem, windows live onecare doesnt conflict with any other programs, and yes i am using a legitimate copy of windows xp home.

  • Try e-mail support. Start here http://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=onecarev2&mkt=en-US then use the link on the lower right corner of the page that says "Get more help". You should be able to start an e-mail support case from there.

  • Axis1111 and A---nonymous:

Can you confirm if you are using the 2.0 beta and having the update problem or are you using the 1.6 production version? Open OneCare, click Help / About.

Basic troubleshooting for update issues here:

    http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1286736&SiteID=2

I had a problem with updates for beta 2.0 yesterday on a Virtual PC that had not been on for about a week. Upon booting up, it was red and receiving an error when trying to update. Rebooting did not resolve it, so I performed the databas reset using the tool explained in the above troubleshooting post. This resolved the problem within a minute. Because that machine was running Vista, I had to save the tool to my desktop and then right click - Run as Administrator. And then I also had to allow the tool through the OneCare firewall! (I'm reporting that one to the team...).

  • yes i am using the pre-release beta 2.0

    BUT

after uninstalling it ; and running a new install everything is good ; so far.

i havent tried updating again so i'll leave that up to windows liveonecare to handle.

if it fails again i'll let you know,

    thanks.

  • how about microsoft fix all the problems with one care, or recall all copies for a full refund. I find its the worst virus software on the market. any one else feel as frustated as my self?, I can only assume microsoft will not do anything untill enought people complain and pass the word on to any one thinking about buying one care, or should it be called, microsoft dont care!

  • I seriously doubt if there is a program that has been written (be it for windows, linux or apple) that hasn't crashed for some unknown reason and no permanant fix been found. Software houses can only predict so much when they develop a software package, we all alter the settings on our pcs without a thought as to how it will affect the running of the machine.

What problems are you having or have you had with OneCare? Have you worked with support? As this is your first post to the forum under this ID, have you posted your issues to the forum?

And, for the record, you have posted to a thread in the 2.0 beta forum for updates - not the production version folders of the forum.

  • The last problem I had was just an unusually large update.  I'm on dial-up, and it took over.  I don't usually have my computer turned on that long at home over a weekend.  Maybe more manual control and better information would relieve my stress at seeing a red balloon.
