Suggestions for a certification exam to take? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been working with C# and .NET for a little over a year now and I am looking into getting a certification of some sort.  Since I have a little experience with C# I have been thinking about taking the 70-483 exam but apparently I can't seem to find a book or a practice exam for it. Since this is my very first Microsoft exam I don't feel comfortable going into it merely from internet research. I was wondering if there is an exam that I can take already that has study materials available for it and will use my .NET/ C# skills that I have acquired so far. Also I would like it if I got certified in 1 exam/ Any suggestions.

    Thank you All

  • Hi,

The exam preparation books for the Visual Studio 2012 products are in the works. There is one coming out for the 70-483 exam within the next few weeks. Here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/MCSD-Certification-Toolkit-Exam-70-483/dp/1118612094/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1367672075&sr=1-2&keywords=70-483  This particular book is not being produced by Microsoft Press, but I know two of the authors. I think that they will do a great job. They are both Microsoft Certified Trainers.

I don't see any practice tests for this exam yet either. But, you can look to earlier versions of C# exams to give you a good sense of how you would do. The 70-536 exam has been out for years. It covers fundamentals of working with the language. Please note that this exam is provided in VB and C#. If you were to take the live exam you would decide at the beginning which language to use. For practice tests, you should purchase the C# version.  You can find this at www.measureup.com and www.selftestsoftware.com. Please remember that you will still need to study up on the newer language features, but this will give you a good idea about the feel of Microsoft exams.

Here is one other option. Microsoft has another certification program called the Microsoft Technology Associate.  It is geared towards career changers, high school and college students, etc. I like to recommend it as an on-ramp to the 70-483 and other exam and certification tracks. here is a link: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/mta-certification.aspx#fbid=HMxcFcWM8si

You might find the 98-361 and 98-372 exams a great place to start.  MTA exams typically are shorter in length than the 70- exams. You will decide between VB and C# when you start the exam. If you click the link for the exams and then look on the "Preparation Materials" area, you may see links to some free training materials.

Good luck! Please check in on this forum periodically and let us know how you are doing.
