Windows 7 not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi. I was recently working on my computer today and it just randomly popped up on the corner of my screen that my windows 7 is not genuine. I ignored it because my regular background eventually came back up but than I got a pop up notification. The notification said that my windows 7 was not genuine and that I had to reinstall it or restore it. If I dont have to Im not wanting to go to the extreme as to delete everything on my computer just to reinstall windows. I put windows 7 on my computer myself almost two years ago and this is just happening now. My windows 7 is genuine though. I still have the disk, product key, everything.  Please help me. Ive tried everything.

The problem you have is highlighted above.
This can be caused by corruption of the Licensing Store
    Recreate the Licensing Store
    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • I did all of that and when I did the last step when you said a Windows Activation dialog would appear it came up and said Window Activation. The smaller print said a change has been made to windows. please restore or re install windows. When I go to click on any of the options it doesnt do anything at all. As I was just typing this another pop up came up saying that I might me a victim of counterfeiting. It says for me to use all of Microsoft features I must have a genuine version.

  • I also went online and downloaded the Windows Genuine Validation update that they have. The results from that was Install genuine windows. Files that Windows needs to work properly has been modified, disabled, or removed. To resolve, you need to install genuine windows. Is it true Im going to have to go out and buy and reinstall windows just to fix this?

  • No- please follow the instructions and post a new MGADiag report

    No real change :(
    run the standard file-system checks....
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

  • It wont run the CHKDSK. I tried twice doing the steps you told me to do above. I restarted my computer and than it just started up normally like it does any other time. Should I go ahead and do the SFC?
    Sunday, April 1, 2012 5:09 PM
  • Yes - we can come back to the CHKDSK problem later.

  • The SFC is in the process of verifying now. Ill update you on what I get back from that.
    Sunday, April 1, 2012 6:15 PM
  • This is what the end result was. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Now to restart my computer and let you know the rest of the results.

  • When signing onto my computer I got a pop up that said an unauthorized change was made to windows. That I must reinstall windows or restore windows system files. Anyway down below is the new MGADiag results.

This is what the end result was. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Now to restart my computer and let you know the rest of the results.

OK - copy the CBS.log file to your desktop, and then upload it to your SkyDrive or other favoured fileshare site, and post a link here.

  • How do I go about doing that since I restarted my computer? I went to the CDM.exe and right clicked as run as administrator and than typed C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log but it came up as access denied.

  • Use Windows Explorer

navigate to the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder, and right-click on the file - select Copy.

right-click on an open area of the Desktop, and select Paste.

Now upload the  copy to you SkyDrive - http://skydrive.live.com - if you have Windows Live Essentials installed, or another fileshare service if you prefer.

You have some very significant corruption there - I would suggest that at least a repair install is going to be required to fix your problems.

Please read the instructions properly - it tells you exactly what you need to do,
You can download an ISO file for Win 7 Home Premium (x86, 32--bit) with SP1 by following the links from this site....

  • I did follow the instrustions right from the site. I dont have SP1 so I went to the step to do it without it. And I followed the instructions. Than it went and was trying to do the upgrade but it said my version of windows is newer then the upgrade they are trying to upgrade my version with so therefore it wouldnt let me. It also kept popping up as I was doing all of this that setup.exe has a bad file and it cant be accessed on this computer. I dont know what that was about though.

  • Download the ISO file and create the DVD - use that to do the repair install

  • It *will* ask - and yes, you can use the same Key.
