what's up with live mesh ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys, just like to know what's going on. From a few articles that I read, like this one:
    http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=4598

it almost sounds like LiveMesh technology might get integrated into future windows live services, but not as we know the service (Mesh) right now. Does that mean that LiveMesh as such is gonna be discontinued?
On a side note, how come LiveSync is being installed silently with Windows Live Essentials ...? you find out by browsing the Windows Live install folder, and it's indeed there, but why isn't it mentioned before the install and why is there no shortcut to it in the start menu by default?
I personally prefer LiveMesh from far to LiveSync, but I got the feeling that Mesh is going to vanish purely and simply. Too bad as the concept outperforms many communication tools between computers in my opinion. So, do we have to understand that LiveMesh could be integrated to SkyDrive, or not, or what, what's up ? thanks in advance for your comments :)

  • I think it is well known that in Wave 4 Live Mesh will be more interactive with other Live apps but I'm not exactly sure what to make of this quote from Ray Ozzie "“But that (Live Mesh) will no longer be discussed in the context of ‘Live Mesh,’ but rather in ‘the Windows Live platform,’ which is now, as you know, which it’s now part of."

Live Sync has always been a part of the Windows Live Installer package but I don't know why it is not an optional installation or why it doesn't add ashortcut to the Start Menu.

  • While we can't really say much for obvious reasons, what Ray said is completely true, Mesh is going to be used in the context of Window Live.  :)

When we can say more about it we will, but all I can ask is be patient with us as we work diligently to bring everything together for you folks.

  • thanks for the feedback. There was another article, but I can't find the link for now, where Ozzie mentioned they realized it was also an issue when, if a part of Live Services, so becoming eventually wide spread, that LiveMesh would be potentially used by hundreds of millions instead of just a few thousands who heard about it like it is now. Technical issue or ethical issue for them I'm not sure...  LiveMesh is an incredible tool and there's no equivalent tool allowing file transfer in such a way, so easily and and so quickly, with such an integration into Windows I mean. May be they fear that...the cloud can be bypassed with Mesh (no synchro is mandatory with the "Live Desktop" all settings are done locally too), it offers an incredible amount of freedom on the local desktop to communicate with others.. I don't know, let's wait and see what they'll do with it

  • I agree it's a great product, but I finally decided after this latest PDC that it's dead, at least in this incarnation.  I see more around the net regarding integrating Live Sync into SkyDrive & such -- screenshots of new "Sync & Devices" internal pages, etc.  I now think it's the future.

i also notice that someone from MSFT has been responding to posts on the Live Sync & Devices Forum, whereas they disappeared from here 6 mos. ago.

the Live Desktop, for me, had limited utility since it's not encrypted, and I already have a remote control solution for my PCs, so I finally removed Mesh and switched to Live Sync.  It's definitely more polished -- as i was setting it up I was thinking about someone with my father's technical level -- Mesh would be too much in terms of the way you deal with folders, Sync probably not.  In terms of syncing, functionality seems to be identical -- still works per-user, so you can sync something under My Documents, for instance, among multiple users on the same PC.  That was the one thing I thought I might lose, so that was a relief.

i am still checking this forum until it goes away, but I'm now feeling pretty sure that's what's happening...

  • Well, if there is to be some merging of Live Mesh and Windows Live Sync, get Windows Live <> Windows Contact Sync in there, will ya? Little odd that there is no MS Sync Tool to keep Windows Contacts and Windows Live contacts in sync.
