Explorer Windows INSANITY!!! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Okay, this one problem, sorry to say, is the lone reason why I end up uninstalling Live Mesh. I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem, but it happens to me any time I install Live Mesh on ANY PC. Okay so here it is: After I install Live Mesh, I go about my day, but it never fails. Any time I am supposed to get a prompt, warning, confirmation, or notification on screen from Windows Explorer, it displays behind the currently active window instead of becoming the active window. If I click once on the screen, THEN it will appear. WHAT'S THE DEAL! I would greatly appreciate any feedback or help from anyone, as I truely love the concept of Live Mesh and what is does. Thank you so very much in advance.

Computer: Dell XPS m1530, Windows Vista Home Premium x64 (But I have experienced this problem on many other machines)

P.S. (I HAVE however heard of the problem where installtion switches Vista to Vista Basic theme. Any fix for this yet?)

  • I'd call that a pretty good test.
If someone files this as a bug and posts the link here, I'll be happy to validate that I experience this, too. It may not be Live Mesh after all, but it sure seems to be based on your quick test and our discussion here....

  • I can confirm I have the same problem. It only happens occasionally though, and doesn't bug me that much. In fact, I didn't realize that it may be caused by Live Mesh until I read your post, assuming it to be Explorer going "quirky".

  • I too have been having that problem... I thought it was a poorly written Hotfix or something.

Iv had the problem on a 32x Laptop and a 64x Desktop.

  • Hmmm.... Is this a Live Mesh issue? I've had the same thing happen on two Vista machines for a while. And, yes, it certainly could have started when I installed Live Mesh on those machines. The most noticible time is when I go to empty the Recycle Bin or delete a file and get the "are you sure?" prompt - which, of course, I can't see since it is behind all open windows.

  • I know i cant really call this a 100% accurate test but I just uninstalled Mesh and rebooted...  After reboot I deleted a couple of things and emptied the recycle bin and all the prompts appeared in the foreground instead of the background whereas virtually none appeared in the foreground with Mesh installed.

Unfortunely after reinstalling Mesh and rebooting again the prompts are still showing in the foreground.  I know it doesnt rule out Mesh as the culprit but it also doesnt confirm it is either.

  • I'll have to pay more attention, but I seem to recall that the background prompts are not always happening, so....

XP users with this symptom can use TweakUI's settings for dealing with focus stealing. (Ref. KB886217).  Even if Vista doesn't have a TweakUI you could probably simulate what it does for this case via RegEdit.
