Upgrade or Full Install? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently upgraded my motherboard, cpu, and power supply on an "e-machine" that died.  (It is the kids computer! I swear!)

The hard drive I have installed was preloaded with OEM Windows XP Home (legal and genuine).

Unfortunately, now the OS will not boot in safe mode or last known good configuration... it is frustrating.

The tech support for the motherboard recommends I reinstall Windows...

The problem is that I have long since lost the "recovery" disc, which I believe wipes your hard drive and gives a fresh OEM install anyways. (I do have some documents I would like to preserve.)

If I wanted to purchase Windows XP home, could I get away with buying the "upgrade" version since the OEM version exists and is installed (though is not working possibly due to a registry error?)  or do I need to buy the full version.  I would hate to have an upgrade disc that I cannot use and cannot return.

    Thanks!!
