Yes, it's another of those Lenovo invalid key activation mysteries... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Noel,

You tried to help me last summer with a Vista activation issue that eventually stumped both of us -- social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/a260bb6b-97e5-4856-b98a-0c090bef1d58  -- I'm hoping we have a little more luck this time...

Now I have a Windows 7 laptop, about 2 months old, Lenovo, that came with Windows 7 Pro x64 pre-installed, but was designed as a Windows 8 laptop -- meaning there is no COA sticker on it anywhere, not even under the battery.  Lenovo tells me that as of Windows 8, the product key is embedded in the firmware.  So I used some key finder software to extract the key.  The product id is 00371-OEM-8992671-00437, I can provide you the key if that is useful.  The laptop belongs to a client.

This laptop self-activated and was working fine until about a week ago, when it started reporting it was not a "genuine" copy of Windows. By the time I heard about this, it was already into what I'd call semi-crippled mode -- updates refused to install and attempts to activate reported an invalid key and an offer to buy a new key (this is significant later in this story).  The first MGADIAG output below was taken in this state, using an older version of MGADIAG that I had handy.

I then started checking some of the things we did in the Vista thread -- chkdsk reports no errors, nor does sfc, nor checksur.  Attempting to "change" to a new product key, using the one reported above did not change anything.

I called Lenovo and they said I could either re-image the disk (a step I *really* want to avoid) or try to get Microsoft to give me a new key. I have not been able to pursue that tactic because the activation dialog does not give me the option of phone activation (even with no network connection). I can get slmgr to give me the Installation ID codes, but I have not yet been able to find out the proper phone number to call -- do you know what it is for Windows 7 Pro 64 bit located in the United States, Lenovo laptop?

I tried a rearm, and that did have some interesting effects --

    1) it reset the activation message from "activate today" to "automatic activation in 3 days";

    2) it allowed me to once again install updates -- which I did, hoping that would fix things, but no such luck -- all updates installed, but still not activating; and

    3) most interesting -- the www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate website, which was offering to sell a new key, is now claiming that this IS a genuine copy.  In other words, the laptop claims the key is invalid and is insisting that I must activate, while the validation website is claiming the key is genuine and refuses to extend an offer to purchase.

The client is a CPA office in the middle of tax season and desperately wants this laptop working -- they would grudgingly buy another key if that resolved this issue permanently, but that option is not even available from what I can see. I'm hoping we can resolve this without having to take that step, but do you know how to get back to the offer if there is no other resolution?

The 2nd MGADIAG (current version) shown below was taken in this post-rearm state.

Moving on, I then attempted to do a repair install using an OEM Windows 7 Pro 64 CD and the key obtained above.  That installation worked fine, but it also did not fix the problem or change anything from the previous state -- still insisting I activate and still being told this copy is genuine.  As part of the install, I disabled the automatic activation option, so the activation message is now reporting "28 days left to activate".

The 3rd MGADIAG below is post-install and represents the current state...

I'm stumped, I'm hoping you have some ideas.  Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Ok, first, in hopes of saving somebody else a lot of time --

Regarding the original problem of a Lenovo E530 laptop with pre-installed Windows 7 Pro claiming to be a non-Genuine copy -- had an interesting conversation with Lenovo today.

The bottom line is that they had a bad production day, affecting about 5000 E430 and E530 laptops.  The laptops were built with neither a COA product key sticker nor an embedded COA-SLP "chip".  This explains why the laptops don't activate for Windows 7 (and they also don't activate for Windows 8).

Lenovo has a list of affected serial numbers (which they will not share) and my laptop is one of them.  Lenovo will repair the laptops at no cost.  Note that, at least in my experience, level 1 support was unaware of this problem and suggested re-imaging the hard drive -- a complete waste of time since it does not address the problem (I confirmed this by experimentation).

If you have one of these laptop models (E530 or E430) and want to confirm, call Lenovo support (800-426-7378), pick the tech support option, and explain that you want your serial number checked against the list of laptops built without the embedded product key.  Mine has a build date of October 2012.

More info to follow, but I wanted to get this marked as the "answer".

looks to me like what you have is a computer that shipped with windows 8. Is there a win 8 sticker on it?

your current install is using a win 7 OEM SLP key which requires a win 7 compliant bios. It simply won't work on a win 8 bios. In order for win 7 to work on this computer you will have to purchase a windows 7.(assuming there are drivers available).

in your current install kb971033 is not installed correctly. you should uninstall and reinstall it.

note: windows is the initial grace period will almost always validate.

  • Yes, there is a Windows 8 Pro sticker on the back and it does the blue/purple color shifting.

Lenovo shipped this laptop with Windows 7 Pro pre-installed.  We have no interest in running Windows 8 on it -- it had better work with Windows 7....

The laptop was placed in service 12/1/12 and has been working just fine with no complaints about activation or genuine-ness until about 2 weeks ago.  Then it started displaying a message in desktop background, lower right corner.

I never install 971033, and according to the laptop it is not installed -- why do you say it is installed?

However, you did remind me I need to re-install updates after the repair.  Thanks!

  • I suspect it did not ship from Lenovo with win 7 preinstalled. If it did they botched the job. win 7 may have been isntalled by the retailer.

in order to get it to work you need a legitimate key. if it shipped from lenovo this way they should have provided a COA key. The OEM SLP key simply won't work and Lenovo should know that.

I never install 971033, and according to the laptop it is not installed -- why do you say it is installed?

  • You're not the first person with this exact problem that I've seen :(

Some shops seem to take the view that since Win8 Pro has downgrade rights to Win7Pro, they can use an OEM Recovery disk and install with that - it just doesn't work that way, and it needs a full Windows 7 Pro Key (which has to be negotiated - but no-one wants to say categorically who you need to negotiate with!). I believe that you have to negotiate with MS - but I could be wrong.

(Incidentally - where on earth did you get that ancient copy of MGADiag to run the first report? - it's at least 4 years old!)

The indication in the report on the WAT update (KB971033) is that it has been installed,  but that the two dll's have been unregistered somehow.

If you look for the folder C:\Windows\System32\wat - is it present? are there four files in it?

If the machine has ever been validated, that would have installed the update in the process.

This should fix that part of it, anyhow -

    Close all open windows.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and type the following command

    wusa /uninstall /kb:971033

    and hit the Enter key

Accept the warnings/confirmations, and wait for it to complete

copy and paste the output (if any) from the command prompt window to a reply here,

    Reboot

    reinstall the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033

    Reboot

run another MGADiag report, and post it.

  • ...I've just realised what caused the file mismatch errors in WAT --

They are the result of having the update installed, and then doing a repair install  - this unregisters the two files without removing them (and the related files) - if you reinstall the update, you can then uninstall it and that will remove the files and unregister them properly.

  • I bought the laptop directly from a MAJOR wholesaler, and it came with install DVDs for windows 8, the recovery image on the hard drive is for Windows 7.

Regarding 971033, all I can say is that Windows Update is offering it as an install option, implying it is not there.  Nor does it show up in any of the update history listings I checked.  All of which might be true if it was not installed properly -- but how do I remove it if it doesn't show up as a removable update?

  • I've been researching this -- found lots of victims but so far no easy solution (or any, for that matter).

Ancient MGADIAG -- I have a bad habit of never throwing anything away :-)  Got lazy and grabbed an old flash drive that had it, instead of downloading, then it occured to me that it was pretty old.

WAT folder -- yes it exists and it has 4 files in it.

Uninstall -- reports nothing to uninstall

Reinstall -- worked as it should, time stamps on WAT files are now current

Uninstall -- removed folder and files

    MGADIAG --

  • the WAT update is now uninstalled but that won't help you.

BIOS valid for OA 2.0: no, invalid SLIC table.  windows 8 uses OA 3.0

you still can't use a win 7 OEM SLP key. you must get a COA key either from Lenovo or purchase a new license

  • My goal is to resolve this so the current key works, or determine who needs to take action to make this work -- we paid for a new laptop from a major manufacturer with the understanding that it would run Windows 7.  Either Microsoft or Lenovo needs to make that happen and I need to figure out which one is responsible.

    Examining the details --

    1) the laptop worked for over 2 months with no activation issues.  It presumably self-activated after 3 days and had no problems doing that -- if it had, I assume it would have started "whining" after 30 days -- it did not.  Therefore we can assume it activated successfully and the key/Windows-7 installation was acceptable to Microsoft, regardless of OEM SLP issues.

    2) about 2 weeks ago, something changed.  It seems this implies an outside influence, since nothing would have changed within the laptop that would change the status of statement (1).  The only outside influence that would apply (I assume) would be Microsoft somehow marking the key as no longer valid.

    3) the Microsoft Genuine website still asserts that this key is, in fact, genuine.  Either the website is broken or there is some sort of fundamental paradox between (2) and (3).  This paradox needs to be resolved.

I don't understand how all this activation stuff works, the above analysis is based on looking at the results.  If I'm missing something or not understanding some detail, please point it out.

As I said, my goal is to either make the existing setup work, or find out who is responsible for doing so.

At this point I don't even have the information needed to take an action -- the current setup does not work (for reasons unknown to me), telephone activation is not accessable because I do not have the phone number, buying a new license is not an option because the Genuine website says the current license is good, and Lenovo is pointing the finger at Microsoft.  I have yet to find somebody at Microsoft to talk to...

I'm hoping this forum will at least answer some of these questions.

    Wednesday, February 27, 2013 4:59 AM
  • Let me take your points one at a time.....

    1) How was the initial install done? by simply booting the machine as it arrived? (It makes a difference).

    2) Something changed - yes. OEM_SLP Keys are ALWAYS blocked from activation at MS's servers, because they are supposed to self-activate using built-in certificates and the proper SLIC table in the BIOS - your SLIC table is seemingly 'damaged', but my limited experience is that this is the norm for a Windows 8 BIOS being read in a Win7 environment using MGADiag. What changed was that something triggered proper function of the self-activation procedures and exposed the problem.

    3) Validation will ALWAYS pass a machine while it's within the grace period - it's designed that way. The test of a Key is activation at this point.

I would suggest that you try contacting your Activation Center for assistance - use the number from this page... https://www.microsoft.com/licensing/existing-customers/activation-centers.aspx - and explain your problem to them (i.e. you had a manufacturer-installed downgrade, and it's now reporting as non-genuine. They will advise the procedures required.

  • 1) yes, just the initial setup that happens when it is turned on.  Then tweeking settings and installing updates.  (how does that make a difference?)

    2) so if I'm understanding this -- the standard activation process for pre-installed windows is self-contained and does not actually contact Microsoft activation servers?  And in this case the internal tables used for that activation are, and always have been, "wrong" for use with a Windows 7 key but somehow that "wrongness" was ignored initially?  The key reported by keyfinder is a "valid" Windows 7 key, but it is being applied to a Windows 8 environment, and failing?  Whereas a COA key (if there were a sticker, or if I bought a new key) would work in this situation because it actually does activate via the Microsoft servers?

    3) So the website is reporting genuine because I did a rearm and hence am once again in the grace period?  In other words, this is a red herring and at the end of the grace period it will again tell me the key is invalid and offer to sell a new one?

Thanks for the clarification -- (2) explains something I was wondering about -- if this key was suddenly marked as bad, why wasn't there a great number of people complaining...

I will pursue the Microsoft conversation and post back the outcome...

    Wednesday, February 27, 2013 5:04 PM
  •  if this key was suddenly marked as bad, why wasn't there a great number of people complaining...

it is a valid OEM SLP key but only on computers with a valid win 7 slic table.

Computers, which are built by large manufactures that come with Windows Pre-Installed, come with two (2) Product Keys:

OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the special instructions found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Windows 7 looks at the motherboard and sees the special instructions and Self-Activates. (that's why you did not need to Activate your computer after you brought it home)

COA SLP: This is the Product key that you see on the sticker on the side (or bottom,[ or inside the battery compartment]) of your computer. It is a valid product key, but should only be used in limited situations (such as if the OEM SLP key stops self-activating for whatever reason). The key must be activated by Phone. (Note: All manufacturers that use the OEM SLP system are required by contract to include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker, that has a COA SLP key, on the computer)

  • I talked to about 5 different people at Microsoft, and the short-form response was that Lenovo was required to provide a product key and Microsoft could do nothing.  Then I talked to 3 people at Lenovo and ended up escalating the conversation to the next support level -- waiting for a call back but it may be a few days...

The Lenovo guy had some interesting comments -- in particular, they believe it is some Microsoft update that is causing this problem (specific update unknown to him); and he claimed other vendors (Dell, etc) were having the same problem.  He also claimed that the standard Lenovo "fix"was to reinstall the factory Windows 7 image.  I asked him what assurance there was that the problem would not come back and he said "None, but so far I have not heard of anyone having a repeat failure" -- doesn't produce a lot of confidence in that solution, but I went ahead and ordered recovery disks anyway.

On the licensing front, it appears that as of Windows 8, Microsoft is no longer using COA stickers (see this link -- http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/Hardware.aspx#PCPurchase) and Lenovo, at least, has stopped including COA stickers on computers that ship with Windows 8 stickers, even if those computers come with Windows 7 installed.

It also appears from this page -- http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/licensing/sblicensing/pages/downgrade_rights.aspx#fbid=qw-jn1z4ttN -- that downgrade rights assume you have a product key that goes with the install media for the downgrade OS (in other words, the downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7 would normally be done using media and product key that I already had from some previous purchase) -- an assumption violated by Lenovo not shipping a product key for Windows 7.

    Thursday, February 28, 2013 12:44 AM
  • More interesting stuff -- this article implies that you can use any Windows 7 Pro product key, even one that has already been used, and that it is the telephone activation stage that provides the actual key -- http://www.howtogeek.com/133168/how-to-downgrade-windows-8-pro-to-windows7 ...

And I thought it would be interesting to look at another Lenovo system that also shipped as a Windows 8 system with Win 7 preinstalled -- only this one says it is genuine.  Here's the MGADIAG output for that --

  • I notice Lenovo released a new bios for my system a couple days ago.  The documentation doesn't say anything about dealing with this issue but I suppose it would be worth a try...

Do you think the compliant system will stay that way or is it just not yet "noticed".  In other words, can you tell from the mgadiag output whether or not it is REALLY compliant or just hasn't been detected as non-compliant?  This is another system I will need to deal with if it's going to break...

  • Is this summary correct? --

OEM-SLP license activation is done using a built-in, manufacturer-dependent product key, and validates against an internal structure that incorporates data from the BIOS, motherboard, etc.  This activation process is independent of the Microsoft activation servers and the OEM-SLP key used is always considered invalid by those servers.  This activation process is version dependent -- version 2.0 is used by Windows 7 and version 3.0 is used by Windows 8.  Version 3.0 will not validate Windows 7 product keys.  This is why the laptop (with version 3.0) is failing to recognize the Windows 7 OEM-SLP product key from the pre-installed Windows 7 as valid.

The standard work-around for this sort of problem is to activate using the COA-SLP product key -- which validates by way of the Microsoft activation servers and does not care about the built-in process.  This COA-SLP  product key is on a sticker that is supposed to be provided with every Windows 7 computer and is unique for each computer.

Based on the articles I noted earlier, it appears that neither Microsoft nor Lenovo is legally required to resolve this problem -- I'm still waiting for an official answer from Lenovo, but I could imagine an answer like this --

"Your computer is a Windows 8 Pro computer, and that gives you downgrade rights to install Windows 7 Pro. However Lenovo is not responsible (nor is Microsoft) for providing you with either Windows 7 Pro installation media or Windows 7 Pro product key.  As a courtesy, we pre-installed Windows 7 Pro, but you are responsible for providing your own product key."

So, folllowing the downgrade logic and assuming the article I noted is accurate, I should be able to use any Windows 7 Pro COA-SLP key I have to initiate telephone activation and claim my downgrade right.

Any reason I shouldn't try that, as in -- will it make things for the current laptop situation any worse if it fails?

  • windows 8 has it's own diagnostic. glad you ran it though. It implies your original report has a win 7 bios, however it is corrupted.

    File Mismatch: C:\windows\system32\oembios.sig[Hr = 0x80070002]

I seemed to recall these lines were on a win 8 bios with this diagnostic, but hadn't seen one since Nov, but had been unable to find it.

doesn't really change anything. you still need a proper key.

    win 8 diagnostic:

open an Elevated Command Prompt window (in Start, type 'Command' - a Command Prompt icon will appear, right-click on it, and select Run as Administrator)

    At the Prompt, type

    Licensingdiag.exe -report %userprofile%\desktop\report.txt -log %userprofile%\desktop\repfiles.cab

    (note the spaces!)

two files will be put on your desktop -

open the 'report.txt' file in Notepad, and copy/paste the results to your response - you can ignore the repfiles.cab file for the moment, as it's only backup data

Well, now I'm confused again.  I thought the issue with the laptop was that it has OEM Activation version 3.0 and Windows 7 needs version 2.0.

To repeat an earlier question -- is this summary correct?

Also, I note that the Windows 8 recovery disks that came with the laptop explicitly state that they require OEM activation 3.0, implying the laptop has that builtin?

The Windows 8 system used for MGADIAG is not mine, I'm waiting for the owner to mail back the LicensingDiag output.

  • To repeat an earlier question -- is this summary correct?

yes. I would add that with OA 3.0 that the unique product key is embedded in bios. this OA 3.0 has effectively killed activation exploits.

I am admittedly unsure about what bios you have. I may be making incorrect assumptions. I have seen only one other MGA diagnostic on a win 8 computer. it had the same 4 lines as noted above. that leads me to guess you have a corrupted win 7 bios. won't be the first time I've been wrong. the only sure thing is your bios is invalid for win 7. could be a win 8 bios or a corrupted win 7 bios. I can't say with certainty.

  • Next, hoping to make a contribution to the activation knowledge -- the embedded product key is NOT part of the BIOS, and it can not be fixed by a BIOS upgrade.  Rather, it is a separate programable "chip" that can only be written with special tools at the Lenovo repair depots.

This is why the MGADIAG reports indicate an invalid SLIC table on this laptop.

I confirmed that as predicted by the downgrade rights, any valid Windows 7 Pro key will activate -- I used a retail upgrade key that had already been activated, the activation by internet process worked without any issues [subsequently it started claiming it needed re-activation by phone, a step I did not take -- I attribute the initial appearance of success to being in the grace period -- see comments further down about using this technique to activate by phone].  Here is the MGADIAG output for the same laptop after that activation...

  • Finally, one more contribution -- I installed Windows 8 and confirmed that it did NOT activate.  I then ran both MGADIAG and LicensingDiag on this laptop, here are the results.  Note that MGADIAG still reports a bad SLIC table (reasonable)...  When the repaired laptop is returned, I will post another set of results for comparison.

  • Many thanks for the feedback!

I don't think much of Lenovo's QA/QC - or their internal communications - if this sort of thing can happen for a day.

  • Ok, so here's the latest -- Lenovo ended up sending a new laptop, preloaded Windows 7.  I turned it on and it activated no problem.  The first MGA below is from that setup.

Then I moved the hard drive from the old laptop (supposedly identical hardware) to the new -- and it still does not activate!  Same OEM-SLP in both and the SLIC is now ok.  The 2nd MGA below is this setup.

Any clue as to what is going on and how to fix it -- I really do not want to have to re-install all the software, etc.

  • A couple more data points --

    1) a clone of the old drive does the same thing, and

    2)  another hard drive, re-imaged with factory Win 7 ON THE OLD LAPTOP, activates just fine.

Obviously, it seems, there is something on the old hard drive that is causing this activation failure...

    MGA from re-imaged Win 7 --

  • Comparing the working and non-working MGAs above, I see 5 differences --

    1) Windows Validation Data -> ID:

    2) Windows Validation Data -> Build Lab:

    3) Licensing Data -> Extended PID:

    4) Licensing Data -> Installation PID:

    5) HWID Data -> HWID Hash Current:

I have no idea what the significance of any of these is....

looks like the install on the old hard drive was done using a retail disk. An OEM SLP key only works with the manufacturer's recovery media and can not be activated by normal means.

the usual fix for this is to change the product key to the one on your COA or reinstall using the manufacture's recovery media.

as to your other questions, I don't have a sound understanding of those

    build 7600 = without service pack 1

    build 7601 = service pack 1 installed

  • Interesting.

I suspect that there is a file system problem in the old hard drive which is causing the error, and which is fixed by the cloning process.

Please run a CHKDSK /R on all the partitions in the old drive, and see

    1) what the reports look like

    2) whether it fixes the problem.

  • ...Oh - -and before that, please attempt validation of the old hard drive att www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate and see if that kicks it into submission.

  • To clarify the disk count --

Disk A - Original hard drive

Disk B - Clone of A, taken at beginning of this fiasco

Disk C - Windows installed using factory recovery disks

Disks A & B both fail to activate, disk C activates automatically.

Back at the beginning, I did do a repair install, using an OEM CD.  I thought I had made the clone prior to that, but it's possible it was afterwards.

I have a few ideas to try, I'll post the results for history...

  • First stop was to confirm that neither the Lenovo Recovery disks, nor the recovery partition, offer a repair install -- only a factory restore.  That's a drag and since there obviously is something that got changed on the hard drive, it seems like there ought to be a way to restore it to the proper condition to make the Lenovo OEM-SLP work.  But that's beyond my level.

Then I decided it was time to try the downgrade rights for real  -- I went thru the following steps:

The system was still in the initial grace period, so I set the system clock ahead far enough to get past the grace period (this seems to be necessary to get the online activation process to fail properly).

Next, starting from the old drive that had Windows 7 Pro installed, but refused to activate, I went thru the steps of entering a different product key.  The product key I used is one that came with a retail Windows 7 Pro Upgrade, which has been installed and activated and is still in use -- about as dead a key as I could find.  The online activation process thought for a while and then declared it to not be good -- but (this is the critical point) it did offer me the option of telephone activation.  Telephone activation is not an option with the OEM-SLP key.

I initiated telephone activation and called the number on the screen.  I then did nothing to respond to the voice prompts (just remain silent and eventually it will get to a point where it offers to transfer you to a representative).  I took that offer and continued to follow that through the rest of the prompts until I was speaking to a human.

They asked for the installation ID, and then initiated the activation check, after which they asked why I was are trying to activate -- I said "I'm exercising my downgrade rights from Windows 8 Pro" and they transfered me back to the automated system which read me the confirmation code.

It appears I have successfully activated Windows 7 using my downgrade rights.  Of course, this may turn out to be an illusion, so I'll wait a few weeks before declaring victory, but I wanted to share the technique on the assumption that it really did work.

You'll note that the person at Microsoft never even attempted to confirm that I had actually purchased Windows 8.  So the success of this process may depend heavily on who answers the phone.

The following MGA output is the result.

  • Finally, to complete the data contributions -- MGADIAG and LicensingDiag output from the new laptop with activated Windows 8 follows.

And one more interesting observation -- having self-activated on the new laptop, I moved the hard drive to the old laptop and Windows 8 is still (so far) claiming it is activated, even tho self-activation is known to fail.  This implies it does not check on each boot.

  • Not quite....

The LicensingDiag report shows that the system is in Notification....

     <LicensingStatus>SL_LICENSING_STATUS_NOTIFICATION</LicensingStatus>

    <LicensingStatusReason>0xC004F009</LicensingStatusReason>
      <LocalGenuineState>SL_GEN_STATE_INVALID_LICENSE</LocalGenuineState>

The F009 error is a 'hardware bonding limits exceeded' error, as would be expected from a motherboard change

and the Key is blocked from Activation

    <ServerProps>0xc004f200</ServerProps>

MGADiag gives the expected 'Unsupported OS' result - but does declare that the SLIC table is a valid one for Windows7

  • The above licensing data is for this combination -- factory installed Windows 8 done on the old laptop (missing key), then the hard drive was moved to the new laptop, at which point System Properties indicated Windows was activated.  This is the point at which I ran LicensingDiag.

It sounds like you are saying it really is not activated?  And that it is complaining about the move from old to new?

I have not run LicensingDiag since I moved back to the old laptop, sounds like that might be interesting since System Properties there is also claiming it is activated (or was the last time I looked).

  • I'm not sure how well the site works with Windows 8 - but try validating at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate  with the above configuration and see what happens.

It's certainly showing as not the configured installation.

  • the validation is not supported on windows 8. this is the message I received with win 8 pro with wmc.

Validation is not currently supported for this version of Windows or for this non-Microsoft operating system.

It appears that you are using an operating system that is not currently supported by the validation process. Only the following operating systems are currently supported:

    • Windows XP Home Edition
    • Windows XP Professional
    • Windows XP Starter Edition
    • Windows XP Media Center Edition
    • Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows 7

For general Windows product information, including purchase options and hardware compatibility, visit the Windows home page.

  • That's roughly what I expected.

On the new laptop - what is the current LicensingDiag/MGADiag result (which OS is installed?)

On the old laptop - what is the current LicensingDiag/MGADiag result (which OS is installed?)

Please use the appropriate tool for each install.

  • The new laptop is running Win7Pro and the current MGADIAG output is what I posted 2013-3-9 @ 4:41 PM, with my description of using downgrade rights via telephone activation.  I have returned that laptop to the client and no longer have easy access.

The old laptop is running Win8Pro, created as described above (factory install on old laptop, activation via new laptop, and then returned to old laptop).  Here is the current LicensingDiag output, generated by the old laptop (as opposed to the previous posting which was run on the new laptop with Win8Pro before I restored the original hard drive and returned to client).

Note also that the old laptop is still claiming it has been activated -- doesn't even show the activation option under Change PC Settings.

I note LicensingStatus now reports Genuine -- it would appear that having passed the self-activation step on the new laptop, Windows is now happy back on its original motherboard even tho that one has no embedded key.

  • The Key type is OEM Digital:-

    <ActiveProductKeyChannel>OEM:DM</ActiveProductKeyChannel>

    but there's no OEM Marker:-

I would expect this install to flip to non-genuine status - but then I would have expected it not to activate on this machine in the first place!

  • Noel,

To clarify -- this hard drive was "factory recovered" on the old laptop (missing key), then moved to the new laptop and activated, then moved back to the old laptop.  The LicensingDiag output immediately above is that last stage.  The LicensingDiag output just previous to the last one is after activation but still in the new laptop.

If you look at the earlier output, it does have an OEM marker.  So it seems that, once activated, I can move the drive back to the old laptop (where the hardware all matches what it is supposed to) and everything is happy -- at least until the next time Windows does a self check and discovers the missing key.

Any idea how often it does that?

  • Not a clue - but expect a maximum of 90 days (and more likely 30) before the system bucks.

  • Yeah -- unfortunately I'm going to have to return this old laptop to Lenovo in a week or so.  If I notice anything interesting in the meantime, I'll report it...
