Need to replace dead operating system drive on WHS 2011 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Hope for some advice, feeling a bit lost.

Yesterday I could not connect to my server so I put a monitor on it to find it boots but can't read the disk so looks like my SSD is dead, I had SMART disk monitoring and it has not been showing issues, happened out of the blue.

I have ordered a new 120GB SSD (old is 64GB) but I'm not sure how to go about restoring WHS.

I have the original installation disks and I made a thumb drive when I set it up (still safely stored inside the server) I have also been making weekly server backups which as stored and and external USB caddy drive.

I can't remember exactly what is on the thumb drive but I was advised to make it during setup, I think it was for recovery? It was 7 years ago in my defence 😂.

I think I therefore have all I need?

I have 4 x 1TB drives in the server that are mirrored to provide 2 usable drives.

I really could do with some guidance on how best to recover my setup, I really do

  • This article is about as close to what you are trying to do. It can't hurt to disconnect power to your raid drives and re-install the OS and then see if it picks everything up.

  • Thank for that.

The problem is it does not give any instructions, I am still none the wiser where to start, either with the installation CDs, the USB key I made during installation or somehow the server backups.

I'm sure it's a step by step process once started but I don't even know where to start, hopefuly my new SSD will be here toorrow and I will have to see what works.
