Error received on entering transaction RRS feed

  • Question

  • I receive an error "This transaction cannot be entered". I have used this program regularly up till now with no issues. I did try to reinstall the program but still get the error. Any thoughts?

  • Some details might help.

Which version of Money?  What type of transaction?  Have you tried altering some of the transaction details (type, payee, category, amount, etc) to see which one is causing the problem?

  • You do want to provide the version info. However for Money 2005 and Money Plus, you can try these:

Particularly if you are not using Money Plus, make sure you don't overwrite your good backup file. Copy it over to other media. If you already overwrote your only backup that pre-dates the problem, that is not so good.

First try a File->RepairMoneyFile->QuickFileRepair.  That is simple, and it would be nice if that cured the problem.

Then try I would try making a repaired version of your file with File->RepairMoneyFile->StandardFileRepair level 2

If it still does not work, try restoring a backup that pre-dates
the problem. If you don't have older backups, review your backup policies.

  • If the standard repairs don't work you can try salv.exe which is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Money Plus\MNYCoreFiles

If still no joy, have a look at this page which I believe was copied from a 2009 thread in this forum:

Amazingly, the Microsoft support page from which the solution came is still available:

  • Google drive causes this problem intermittently for me. If I shut it down from the system tray, the issue goes away. I can only guess it can't write a transaction while the file is being archived to the cloud

You bring up a good point. You should normally not put your *.mny file to a mirrored drive, such as OneDrive. You could set to put your upon-exit backup file into the mirrored place.

  • I have no idea why, but I use onedrive without difficulty. I keep backups elsewhere of course.

  • I had the same problem, it seems like Google "Backup and Sync" was stuck uploading my money file, so MS Money refused to enter a new transaction.  I closed down "Backup and Sync" and it worked (didn't even have to close and reopen MS Money).

  • Yes, it appears that Microsoft has abandoned the 240621 page and I don't see it on the Wayback Machine.  However, the related link:

    https://www.accountantforums.com/threads/error-message-this-transaction-cannot-be-entered.88717/

still works and I have saved it to the Wayback Machine.  IRRC, it has the same information.
