Uninstall Beta 2.0 Corrupts registry - hoses CDROM / DVD RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was testing Beta 2.0, and relatively stable and happy with it.  My router vendor was offering a beta test of router based protection, so I uninstalled WLOC from my 3 computers (1 Vista Home Premium, 1 XP Home, 1 XP Pro) in order to check out the alternate product.

I ran this new product for a week, and had a need to install some other software from CDROM.  The computer I tried to install (XP Pro) on didn't show its CD, so I removed in device manager, rescanned hardware, and there was still an error.  Properties of the CD indicated the registry entry for the device was missing or corrupt.  OK, I'll give up on this one, move to one of the other machines and map its CD as a network resource.  Strange coincidence.  Same problem on all three computers.  No CD/DVD, and same error noted with registry missing or corrupt.

Hooray for system restore on 2 of the three machines.  Restored to day before product change, and the CD Drives reappeared.  The third machine wouldn't/couldn't complete the restore, so I'll leave it alone for now.

The 2 machines that DID restore had enough registry and system settings that they though WLOC was still installed, although it really wasn't.  I uninstalled on both machines.  Hmmmm, the CD / DVD drives disappeared again and showed the same errors.  Reinstall, and the drives come back.

On the third machine that I couldn't restore, I simply reinstalled WLOC and the stinkin' CD/DVD drive reappeared!

I'm too exhausted to uninstall and debug anymore tonight, but what in the world would uninstall of the product do to the registry that would cause this problem?  Not gonna be a great experience for people that subscribe for a year and decide on different product afterwards.

I know this forum isn't MS support, but where should I go to report the problem and/or get it corrected?

    Thanks!

  • You can file a bug here - https://connect.microsoft.com/site/sitehome.aspx?SiteID=168

And you can contact support here - http://help.live.com/help.aspx?mkt=en-us&project=onecarev2 using the Get More help link.

Fellow MVP, Doug Knox, has a utility to correct this on XP - http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

  • When I uninstalled WLOC Beta 2.0 from my pc, I also lost my CD/DVD Drives!

System restore did not work for me I had to reinstall WLOC Beta 2.  Now the CD/DVD Drives are back but my installation of WLOC Beta 2.0 is corrupted - asking me to "turn on virus and spyware monitoring"  and "turn on the firewall".

  • Do you want to continue using OneCare 2.0 beta? If so, if rebooting doesn't get the a/v and firewall turned on, you may want to uninstall/reinstall once again. If you don't want to keep using the beta, try the tool I posted above from Doug Knox to fix the missing optical drives. Or use the link for support.

  • Same thing just happened to me.  I uninstalled Beta 2.0 and both my DVD's are gone.  Nothing will bring them back including system restore.

  • See my post from 8/23, above. Several people have reported that the utility by Doug Knox fixes the problem. And please file a bug on Connect.

  • (Sorry, somehow with all the installs and uninstalls I have created 2 different user accounts, thus the 2 different user names).

I am running VISTA HOME PREMIUM so I am unable to use the "fix" you have mentioned.

  • Multipl IDs are okay, Ed. Use the link above to contact support for 2.0 to get help with this problem. I don't know if Doug's utility works on Vista.

  • Run Regedit

    1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    2. Restart your computer.

I uninstalled OneCare and removed it after a while. My CD/DVD drive disappeared. I did this and it came back. No problems since.
