Password protection wrong RRS feed

  • Question

  • Well, my hard drive died (actually the Windows file corrupted and absolutely would not boot up at all), and I decided to just get another computer since the last one was about 6 yrs old already.  Now I can't use my Money program!!!!!  I did not use Passport, strictly computer-only password protection.

Background:  Last computer using Windows XP with Money 2004 (not 2005 either), and since I can't log into the other computer, I can't get Money to load and I could export all my data somewhere else.  I have a SATA drive reader (makes my previous hard drive look like just another external drive to new computer, via USB) so I CAN get to the files to copy them.

New computer is Windows 7, and I reinstalled the Money 2004 onto it.  File - Open - point to last backup file on old drive (also copied onto new "Old Hard Drive" directory on new computer desktop) and it prompts for the password.  All good so far.  Put in the correct password and I get an error that it was not the proper password!  WTH????  It IS the proper password!  No shadow of doubt that it is incorrect. There are 3 backups I can choose from too (7/15, 7/17, 7/18), and none of them work.  :o(

Any ideas of how to get this going correctly?  There are WAYYYYY too many entries for me to start all over again!!!!

    Please help!!

  • Well, I think that did it!  I downloaded and installed the Sunset Deluxe and I can open the files now!!  Taking me a bit of time to remember how Money does things (repacks the Money file and the Backup upon exiting) so I'm trying to make sure I put them in different spots but accessible, AND make sure Money knows how to find them!

Thanks for your help!  I think this is resolved now!

  • First, I would copy your latest *.mny and those three *.mbf files to your Documents folder on the new computer. That is in case the old drive fails. Write down the password while you remember it. If there is any doubt, write down any variations that you can think of.

Your symptom sounds suspiciously like your install disk is Money 2005, but you are confident it is not.

I would download and install the Money version appropropriate to your location using the information in the first post in this forum. If that works, and is able to convert and open your existing Money file, then you may want to just continue from there. There is mixed experience with how the older versions work with Windows 7 64-bit. You would want to go to Tools->Settings->BackupSettings to adjust the SaveIn place to a place that exists on the new computer. The Browse button is useful for that.

At that point, you could install that new version and reinstall from your Money 2004 disk if you don't like the differences of the newer version.  You would not be able to use the *.mny file that got converted, but you could use the *.m12 file, a copy of your Money 2004 file that gets created when you convert a Money 2004 file to a newer version. If that does not work for you on the new computer, reinstall the newer version and go from there.

  • Thanks so far!  I'll try to find the newer version to which you refer.

I am confident it is 2004 because the disk says so, and the About info shows that it is software version 12.0, not 14.xxx like the 2005 is.

I've tried to put the backup file on my new computer in a good Money directory spot, similar to how I did it on the last computer, but I can't even open the old file to get that far!

Thanks again, I'll keep looking and watching this thread!

  • Do not put your *.mny or *.mbf files within the "\Program Files" folder.

As a troubleshooting technique, you could try opening Money by right-clicking the launch icon, and choosing RunAsAdministrator. That will work even if you have your *.mny file in the wrong place.

  • Nice.

Note that Sunset has the ability to keep multiple (default 4) date-stamped backup files for both upon-exit and scheduled  backups. I suggest making the scheduled backups to a flash drive, in case of disk failure.

Note that Sunset does not do direct online access. If you use a broker or credit car that provides an OFX /QFX server, PocketSense can be used to get the transactions and feed that to Money. http://microsoftmoneyoffline.wordpress.com/2010/10/06/cal-learners-review-fidelity-401k-citi-card-and-vanguard-account-info/ lists a lot of such institutions, and has config info.
