I FOUND THE FIX!!
I was surfing this forum and reviewed a problem/solution to another error ID 0014-80040154. The Microsoft advice is found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930157/en-us and suggests, amongst other things, to turn off "Automatically detect settings" in Internet Explorer. I checked my settings and found this to ALREADY be turned off. So, like an inquisitive monkey, I turned it on And Wallah! I was able to subscribe Live OneCare without any further problems.
Since my XP SP2 computer connects directly to an oridnary Linksys router and then directly out through my speedstream dsl modem, and all my other programs and IE7 work fine, it's hard to understand what the problem is with Live OneCare. I hope this helps.
Now if we could only turn off those annoying pop-up balloons in OneCare and have pop up's when something is wrong but not when everything is okay!

I'm not familiar with that error, which seems to be a LiveID sign-in error. What is the text accompanying the error and at what point are you getting the error?
You can contact support for help with the problem -

I have tried every avenue up this point to get a answer on why I get this error. I am still frustrated and seem to be repeating steps to rectify the error.

It might have something to do with the "Glitch"\"Bug" that is currently effecting other subscribers. It appears that OneCare is showing subscribers accounts as expired even though their accounts have been paid well into the next year. You might have to wait until they fix the "Expired" issue before you can add a pc to an existing (or new) account.

Wayne, does every avenue include contacting support per my original reply? As I indicated, I am not familiar with that error. Can you log in at http://billing.microsoft.com and see the status of your OneCare subscription?

Just want to chime and say that I too have the same error code 80048265 with v2.0 OneCare. My pc was registered with the previous version but cannot with 2.0. I've contacted tech support but without resolution. None of my other pc's on my network have had any problem subscribing. Any solutions out there yet? I don't have any problems signing onto my live account or passport account. I even uninstalled and used the Microsoft clean up program and reinstalled without success.Sunday, January 20, 2008 12:32 AM

When you try to sign in with the LiveID from that PC during activation? I still have no information as to the source of that error, unfortunately, so my advice is to contact support -

The error occurs during activation. I click on "Suscribe", I answer yes to "I have a Live ID" and click "next". I fill in my Windows Live ID and password and click on "Sign In". This message pops up instantly:
"Signing in was unsuccesful because of an error. Please make sure that you are connected to the Intnernet and try agian later. If the problem persists, contact support. Error code: 80048265".
I do have a persistant DSL connection and Live OneCare status is "Green/Good". There is no delay in receiving the above message like when an Internet Explorer timeout occurs. I do have a Live ID, two of them actually, and have tried both. I never have a problem signing onto my accounts from the Internet so I'm sure my accounts and passwords are accurate. I have several other computers all with Live OneCare and are without problems.
I do have a case # with Microsoft on the matter but no advice yet. I have a few months of Trial time left on this install so there's not any damage at this point; just some frustration.

I had the same problem and spent 2 hours trying various methods and searches to fix!!!!. Thanks to BonShaw for finding and posting the fix. (I actually had to uncheck the "automatically detect settings" under IE7 Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings to get mine to work. (Thanks also to GeraldMac for pointing out the path)
