XP Check Disk will not complete step 5

  I ran check disk as a PM. Had no problems prior. I asked check disk to run at the beginning of the next start up. Check Disk runs through step 4 but when it comes to step 5 (checking free space), it gets hung up at 35%. Each time I reboot the computer check disk starts again from step 1. I let the CPU run all night and in the morning I still was stuck in step 5 at 35%.
  How do I get out of check disk?
