Isolate Project Server 2010 in existing SharePoint 2010 farm RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an existing SharePoint 2010 farm with 1Web Front End, 1 Application Server and 1 Database Server in a lab environment.

I'd like to add Project Server 2010 to the farm by adding an additional Web Front End and Application Server and isolate all Project Server 2010 activity to the new servers. My plan is to install Project Server to all Web Front End and Application Servers, but only enable the Project Server services on the new Application Server, and create the PWA Web Application on the new Web Front End server.

Is this a supported configuration? I've not been able to find anything depicting a similar deployment.

  • Solution as per your need and environment is

You add one application server and configure Project Server Application service on that app server. Once you will create PWA in this server it will create db in your database server with sharing to SharePoint which is perfect.

You can configure services like SSRS,EXCEL, Secure store etc in existing App server

Then you can add Web front end server to the farm then you can run some of the services on that server like index or search services.

Once you will add new WFE server in the farm you have to have use load balancer on WFE which will assign request to WFE server as per script.

In this way you will create Isolated Project server application. As you have your dedicated server for Project Server Application. .

  • To add to Kirtesh's reply.  Yes that is supported, simply starting the project service on that app server will limit all project server related activities to that server.  However, the web application will be created on all servers in your farm, but as kirtesh points out, limit the traffic at DNS or load balancer to only go to that WFE.
