WHS Console Server Storage Problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been running my server fine for sometime now. now when i click on the server storage tab it does not show me the total server size or the available size it also dose not show the pie chart. on the left side under the drive list it shows 1 - 1TB drive under the non-storage drives. it also shows 3 - 1TB, 1 - 500GB, and 1 - 750GB(O/S) drives under the storage drives list. the 500GB shows "not Added" but is added, always has been. i am also getting a whole bunch of "file Conflict" errors under the network health but i am not missing any files. i only have 5 drives physically in the server totaling 4.25TB. all but 375GB is used already again i can still access all my files fine. please help me with these problems...

    Ken,

None of the drives are external, all are Internal SATA.

    Olaf,

aall the drives in the server are still showing as part of storage pool the not sure where it is getting the one showing as non storage...the server console shows 6 drives total there are only 5 drives in the server. i have tried the restart already and unfortunately right now i do not have enough space to remove any of the disks right now. nice to see someone else in germany too...what part? i am in rheinland-phalz.

I would start by running chkdsk /r on each drive in your server (it sounds like you may have an issue with at one drive failing).  If there are no errors, you might have to do a Server Reinstallation.

  • Hi John,

the Add-In WHS Disk Management may help you to determine the disk by its serial number (although it may be not as easy to figure out the serial numbers on the disks while mounted in the case, and if the same drive is shown as part of the storage pool and again as separate entity as I understand your description, this could also result in no serial number shown for the fake non storage drive).

As kariya mentioned, running chkdsk on each drive on the server would be a recommended option (but take a long time for this amount of disks). This FAQ explains, how to run it on all server drives.

Without an additional disk a controlled removal of the disk from storage pool (after identifiying) may be impossible, but if you disconnect if, bot drives should disappear (one claimed as missing in the storage pool) and you should be able to force a removal. Still have to recover the data, which may be unique on the disk.

If you have a spare USB disk, you could try to add this temporary to the storage pool, remove the faulty disk from storage pool, recover data, if necessary, fix or replace it and add the fixed/replaced disk again. After that remove the USB drive from the storage pool again, since the experience too often did show issues with USB drives integrated in storage pool.

  • Hi John,

if a drive is not longer shown as part of the storage pool, it has usually experienced some corruption (which can have various reasons, maybe the event log of the server can give you more details).

In some rare cases a reboot of the server may help to get the disk integrated again.

Ensure, that you have all Windows Home Server updates installed and still enough space on the remaining disks and remove the disk through the console from the Storage pool. Even if this works (this should resolve the file conflicts resulting from tombstones pointing to the missing disk), you may have issues with backups (if parts of those have been stored on the trouble disk) and may loose data, which had been stored on non duplicated folders and not been backed up to an external drive.

This FAQ (last section) shows, how you can try to get the data off the disk, if it is still readable in Windows Explorer.

  • Are any of your drives are external, connected by USB?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
