MS Dynamics CRM 2011 - Country field RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

Can anyone please suggest if we can change the "Country" field (currently free text field) into a drop down list? Is this easy enough to do or needs a developer?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

This is not very hard. You can customize the form, add a new field of the type "Option Set", add the options, remove the old field from the form and add the new and finally publish.

There are some aspects to this like prefixes, mappings etc. that you might need to take into consideration as well. There are several excellent books out there, for instance The CRM Field Guide, which can help you out.

  • In addition to Gustaf's reply, it is better to create such option sets globally. Then you could use it every where on every entity, and it is not needed to create similar option sets for entities. To do so, go settings > Customizations > Customize the system > Option sets. Create option set and save and publish the customizations. You could use this on every entity.

  • You should also write a plugin to fill in the default country field.

So other functionality, which depends on this field, will continue to work.

For example, you can use a custom country field but users still want the country field to be synced to the outlook client (for contacts).

You can also configure the default country field to 'Not Searchable'. Users don’t want to see 2 country fields when using the advanced find.
(You should hide al fields that are not on the form)
