Syncing problem. - Why are some file types excluded RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
I was battling with this for some time trying to work out why some of my files stopped syncing.
Then buried in the online help files I found reference to a list of excluded files...

    Namely
    • .bak
    • .gfs
    • .lnk
    • .mbf
    • .mny
    • .mpc
    • .pst
    • .sav
    • .tmp
    • .wlx
    • .laccdb
I was using Mesh to sync my MS money files between work and home computer.  This was working great before but it appears in one of the updates it's now excluded?  Why? It was really useful.

It was also convenient to have it sync the .mbf backup files and be confident that there was always an remote backup available if my PC ever crashed or got corrupted.

I think it's important to make this list much more prominent so people are aware but please give us back the ability to sync .mny files.

    Thanks

  • defining which files to sync (and when) is actually one of the more popular suggestions on the suggestions thread (http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/0a1d21c6-0d72-4b43-a6ac-1ad4257a9158) - add your vote!

  • I would like to have some of these file types synked as an option. For example having the same file structure on two computers and several shortcuts (lnk) it would be useful to be able to sync them.

I also find .bak and.tmp to be useful to synk.

If I want to "move content from one PC to another I would like to be able to sync .pst without having to zip them first.

    Hi,

Live Mesh blocks the syncing of different types of files for different reasons - though we do want to hear from you, as nachmore indicates, if there are changes to this part of Live Mesh that you'd like to see.  I agree with you, however, that this should be more prominent - in fact, I've gone ahead just now and created a sticky with this information!

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Thanks for the reply.
Are you able to share any technical reasons why the decision was made to block some files types were blocked.
I can understand some types like .bak, .tmp etc as a way to filter out the noise left from working files.
I also imagine .pst is blocked because delta copy is not implemented yet and these files can get massive, resulting in potential corruption but what about the others?

For example I can work around the .mny file type by simply changing the extension but is there some unknown risk in doing this?

  • Sync IS sync people... nothing should be left out...

Apparently .bak from autocad files DO sync without a problem....

    vote for the fix here...
