Recovering deleted files after a sync RRS feed

  • Question

  • Executive summary: Accidentally tried to sync a large (>5gb) folder with Live Desktop so the sync hung when Live Desktop filled. Maybe because of this, maybe not, I am missing many files on the source computer. I'm new to Mesh, so a user error may underlie this problem, but I don't know how to proceed.

If there is a post I missed that pertains to this, I apologize: Feel free to send a link my way.

Details: I wanted to set up this large folder to synchronize across my computers, Groove-style, but NOT to be on the Live Desktop. Two computers are involved: My desktop ("Win7") and my Macbook Pro. Synchronization got under way, but there are two issues. (1) The files were being put on the Live Desktop after all, and (2) the files are deleted from the Win7 source.

Now most of the files in Live Desktop exist in name only. When I try to do something with them, I get the message "The file has not completed uploading to Live Mesh." (Not surprising: Mesh is full.) Some files are present, presumably those that moved before the quota was exhausted.

Timing is part of the question. I set up the sync some days ago, probably over a week, and the files didn't vanish 'til today. Also, the Mac didn't start syncing 'til today either, but the files disappeared from Win7 before the Mac got going.

Now, on the Mac, a number of files -- and all of the folders -- have appeared . Interestingly, they arrived from Win7, and not from Live Desktop. I say this because some of the files that made it to the Mac never made it to Live Desktop.  This tells me that Live Mesh is finding material on Win7 that I can't see. I assume they're tombstoned somehow on Win7.

    What I've tried:

    * Checked Win7's recycle bin. The missing folders are there, but not their files.

    * Checked the forum and the web generally for problems that look like this one. So far I haven't found anything.

So now I have three questions. The third can wait for now.

    1. I would be more than happy to have one intact copy of the original folder structure on either of the two computers. Maybe if I wait long enough I'll get that on the Mac, so for now I'll wait, fingers crossed. If the missing files don't eventually turn up on my Mac, where can I retrieve them from?

    2. What on Earth happened here? I suspect I should have changed the sync settings to prevent files from going to Live Desktop, but I have no idea why the source files were deleted. Are they tombstoned during synchronization for some reason?

    Thanks,

    Rick

  • I wish that I could tell you why that happened, since it should not have happened. I'm glad that you had a backup. When Live Mesh deletes a file it goes to the Recycle Bin, so it is unclear why that didn't happen.

I suspect that what happened is that you added the folder, did not exclude the Live Desktop to make the sync P2P only, and when the files that did sync to the Live Desktop also synchronized to the Mac, the Mac reported that the merged folder did not include the files that would have overflowed the Live Desktop storage, hence the instruction to delete these files from the source PC. I'd call that a bug, if that was the case.

Have you looked at Live Sync for you scenario? It is a released product - http://sync.live.com

  • Update to above: I've learned that you can't do what I originally wanted to do, namely sync a folder directly to a Mac. I guess Mesh won't do that without having the folder on Live Desktop, and I can't put it there because of the size of the folder. I'll find a different approach.

Meanwhile, I just restored the folder from backup, so I no longer have a problem to solve. I would love to see an explanation of why the files were deleted from the source folder, though.
