Can Not Activate Windows "Error Code 0x8007232B" RRS feed

  • Question

  • when I purchased my Vista Business a month ago, I know for sure I activated it online. Well today, without warning, the 30 day period has come and I am locked out of windows untill I activate it online. So, I grab my product key and get ready to activate it, when suddenly I get this message,

    "Windows Activation Error

A problem occured when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0x8007232B."

Then it says when I click more info,

    "DNS name does not exist"

What does this mean? How do I fix it? Remember I am in the 30 day lockdown mode, so I am unable to access anthing on my computer, other than the internet to "activate" vista.

  • Just hit the change key and enter the same key that came with your CD

  • When you try to log in, you should be presented with a window that gives you four options:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. Activate Windows online now --> (this will try to activate with whatever key you already have installed)

    2. Buy a new product key online --> (self-explanatory)

    3. Retype your product key --> (this is the same as "Change product key" and will give you the opportunity to enter a new key if you want to activate with a key that's not yet installed)

    4. Show me other ways to activate --> (this is will give you two more options

            a.  Use my modem to connect directly to the activation service

            b. Use the automated phone system

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please click the 3rd button, “Retype your product key”.  After you enter your key, click on Next.

Please let me know if that still doesn't work for you.  Thanks!

  • This still does not work. after I enter the product key, it goes to activate and gives me the error message once again. I called Microsoft, and was told I was basically out of luck.

  • Still doesn't work. Am I am getting really frustrated with Microsoft. I paid for my software and I deserve to have a working product and help from the company I purchased this software from without having to fork over 60 more dollars.

  • Hi Eddie76,

Because this forum is dedicated to validation issues, you’ll need to contact outside support for the expertise necessary to troubleshoot your non-validation related issue.  You can do so by posting or searching in the Vista pubic newsgroups, found here: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx or by following this link to Product Support Services: http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=11732 .  Microsoft has a 90 day free support period that starts on the day you first acquire Vista.

If you bought your computer pre-installed with Vista either from a computer store or an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) like Dell or Gateway, you’ll need to contact them for support.  Thanks!

  • You may find a simple solution here:

    http://www.chapterzero.co.uk/news.aspx?article=Fix-Vista-Activation-DNS-Error-0x8007232b&id=16

We contacted microsoft and they told me to contact my IT department. I am the IT Manager.

Anyways, long story short, the above solution should help some to fix their problem.

  • I have an available product Key, but when I hit the Change Product Key link under System properties nothing happens. How can I get the Change Product Key function to work on my machine?

I had the same problem, this KB article solved it.  Here is what I had to do:

Method 2: Use a Multiple Activation Key

Change the product key to a Multiple Activation Key (MAK). To do this, open an elevated command prompt, and then type the following command:

    slmgr -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Note In this command, xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx represents your MAK product key.
