Can't activate Windows 7 or not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • If you previously activated your copy of Windows 7 and it suddenly claims to be not genuine, you may have a corrupted license.  If you tried "slmgr /ipk [product key]" and it generates an error, you most likely have a corrupted license.  I will attempt help anyone encountering this issue without the use of third-party hacks & cracks and keep your copy of Windows legit.

    1. Open the Start menu and type "cmd" in the search box.  Right-click on CMD and click "run as administrator".

    2. In the command window, type "slmgr /rilc".  Wait a few seconds and a window should open.  Close the window.

    3. In the command window, type "slmgr /rearm".  Wait a few seconds and close the next window that opens.

    4. Restart Windows.

    5. Right-click "Computer" and click "Properties".

    6. In the "Windows Activation" section (bottom of the window) you should now have the option to activate Windows.  Click the link and you should be good to go.

    7. Just to make sure your legit, click the "Genuine Advantage" icon to the right of the Product ID.  Your default web browser should open a microsoft page with a button to validate your copy of Windows 7.  Click the button and wait a few seconds.  If validation is successful, then you're back on track.

    Hope this works for you.

No need to run an mgadiag, as you have told us what's on the computer.

Do tell us if the computer has a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) for Windows XP on it, and if so, what edition of XP, and whether the CoA has the computer manufacturer's name on the CoA.  Don't post the product key.
