  • Question

  • Hi

I am totally baffled by this validation requirement. I reinstalled an OEM XP media center edition as the PC I bought had a faulty power supply and then motherboard and I replaced them. I am now being asked to validate the software but the online system doesn't work because it is treating it as a different computer and I don't have the validate option on the menu on my PC anyway. What on earth are the many people in my position supposed to do and why do we have to waste our time doing it more to the point ?

  • Calm down - you can fix this. Select to Activate over telephone. Call Microsoft, with the number on screen, and then Give them the code.
then type the codes they provide you in the box. Explain to them that you have replaced the motherboard.

  • mahutchinson,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program forum.  If you have an OEM machine originally, like Gateway or Dell, and your power supply goes out and you replace it. Then your motherboard goes out, you normally need to contact your OEM like Gateway or Dell for an identical Motherboard. If you did that and need to telephone activate, there below is information which will assist you. If you upgraded your motherboard for increased features/functionality or for performance, you may not be able to activate. The OEM License of Windows is tied to the original Motherboard which came with your OEM Machine.

    From the Desktop:

    1.

Click Start,  All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then Activate Windows.

Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the  taskbar notification area next to the clock.

    2.

Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows now.

    3.

Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement, click Back, and then click Next.

    4.

Follow the steps in the “Activate Windows by phone” dialog box, and then click Next.

Note The number appears now and differs based on the location that you select.

    5.

When activation is completed and you receive the following message:

You have successfully activated your copy of Windows

    Then click OK.

  • mahutchinson,

For continued support online, I'll need you to run the MGADT.

In order to receive the best support, we request all users to initially run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool.  This will try and identify the individual issue you may be experiencing.

By clicking the link below, you will download the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT).  Then click the Run button. Then click the Run button again. Then click the Continue button to perform the diagnostic. The Windows tab should show, click the Copy button to paste your report to the clipboard.  Then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum by adding a post in it and pressing Ctrl V (to paste the text). Clicking the OK button will clear the Diagnostic window. Here is the download link:

Please tell us about the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for your copy of Windows XP.

    1. What edition/version of Windows XP is titled?

    ·         Home

    ·         Professional

    ·         Media Center

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. Please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing.

    5. DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for, see this page to reference your COA:
