Visual Studio on Windows 10... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to install Windows 10 Pro on a virtual Machine for VS development.  I got the MSDN ISO file (multiple versions: Home and Pro) from MSDN downloads.  When creating the VM, it automatically installs the Home edition and does not give me an option during the process to install the Pro edition.I can't get anywhere without first getting past this problem.

    Thanks in advance.

PS.  If this is not the right place, sorry.  I could not find an appropriate place to post this.

  • It's probably dependent on the key you provide as to what features will be available.

  • Hi Ken,

So the real issue is related to the windows 10 in your VM, it is not the real VS IDE usage issue, am I right?

For the windows issue, maybe this forum would be better for you:

Or it is related to the tool how you install/setup the VM. Anyway, I am moving your question to the moderator forum ("Where is the forum for..?"). The owner of the forum will direct you to a right forum.

    Best Regards,

    Jack

  • Hi, Jack,

Yes, the real issue is how to get the MSDN multi-version disk to install the right version (pro) off the MSDN disk.  From there, I can begin setting up my VS IDE and development environment.

I have been a MS developer for decades, but installing the right version of Windows from the MSDN CD was my real problem.  Sorry for the wrong forum.  I just couldn't find the right place to post the question.

    Thanks.

  • Dave,

Thanks.  There are separate product keys for each version.  I am pretty sure tried both.  Each time, the MSDN disk resorts to the Home version.  When I try the Pro version product key, it just tells me it's not the right key.

I will, however, try it again with a new VM and see what happens when I try different keys.  I hope the answer is this simple.  In the past, with MSDN disks, it offered a menu where you could choose the version you wanted to install.  This disk does not appear to work this way.

  • Sounds like it may be the wrong ISO you should have got this prompt before it starts the install. (or maybe you skipped it)

  • Dave,

Thanks.  I had to get another product key.  The Windows 10 Pro retail was not the right one.

    Thanks for the hint!

    Cheers,

    K
