hi Chamal,
Q. >>>>>>>>>>whether i can self study this course and take the exams <<<<<<<<<<<<
yes, you can prepare yourself and attain the exam.
Q. >>>>. If that will there be any extra cost <<<<<<<
You have to pay registration fee for the exam. In India it is $50.00 , To know how much the registration fee for the exam you have to follow this link.

Hi
If you take a look at my signature there is a set of links and one is 70-505 which is the .NET 3.5 version of 70-526. You will see by the list of links from those pages who much you wil have to go through and also how much you may already know.
You can self study of course, and you can use the MS Press MCTS Training Kit to guide you but you will also need to supplement your learning from other sources such as the MSDN.
Realistically there is no set time frame for how long one should study as its based on how well you can assimilate the subject matter and also your relevant experience to the subject matter at hand. It can range from 2 days to 6 months. So be honest with yourself and go through the exam matrix and see how much of that you know or dont know and then work out from there how much time it would take you to get up to that level.
With the book you will probably see quickly how long you will need.
For the exam cost.. it depends on the country, ie India is 50USD, USA is 125USD, Ireland is about 215USD and Norway is about 350USD for the exam. So you will need to check on Prometric (or see this post )

Firstly ,in my opinion, of couse you can study MCTS 70-526 by yourself and pass it if you have good materials and make a good plan to stick on .
Training courses ,to some extent ,just help you to understand your knowledge better and grasp the main topic more quickly.

How long? It depends on your experience, but 1-2 months should be enough if you had some exposure
to .Net programming.
MS Prep Kits is all you need to pass. If you want to get a really good score, supplement this with other
.Net books and prep tests. But I think the MS prep kit is all you need to pass with 700+ score.
Good Luck,
