Converting FAT32 to NTFS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having trouble converting my external hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS

so I can use Onecare backup.

I have a new computer and have followed instuctions for Vista using command prompt as an admistrator but get a message

"The type of file system is FAT32"

"Enter current volume label for drive L:"

L is the location of my external drive but I do not know what or where to locate the volume label requested...

    Can anyone help???

  • Open Windows Explorer and right click on the external drive and select Properties. The volume label is displayed at the top. It may be blank.

If there is nothing on the external drive, it may be easier to just format the drive as NTFS. Right click the drive and select Format. Choose the NTFS defaults.

If there is data on the drive, be sure to copy that data to another location in case the conversion from FAT32 to NTFS encounters a problem.
