Annoying genuine office popup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Four years ago I bought a computer with MS Office 2000 installed from the company I was employed by. Now I get the annoying pop up telling me my Office is not genuine. I have run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool 1.9.001.0. Validation status for Office is 114Blocked VLK 2. What shall I do?

  • Hello Sissor Valley,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office XP Professional med FrontPage - 114 Blocked VLK

The report is telling us that you have a nongenuine installation of a Volume Licensing-only edition of Office XP Pro with Front Page.  Your installation was done with a now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK).

Volume Licensing editions of Office such as your installation of Office XP Pro with Front Page are not to be sold to individual consumers, and are only to be sold to larger businesses, educational institutions, and governmental agencies who need flexibility in installing and deploying many copies of Office.

These Volume Licenses should not be sold to consumers because they are not permanent licenses; they are subject to a current Volume Licensing Agreement that has a finite term, sort of like a lease.  Consumers thinking they purchased permanently licensd software would understandably be upset when their software stopped working at the end of a lease.

Organizations that have purchased Volume Licensing licenses for Microsoft Office products DO NOT have the right to "sell" any or all of their licenses to individuals.  The organization was in violation of the Volume Licensing Agreement if they sold a computer to you and represented that such sale also included the rights to use the installed copy of Office.  Not to mention the fact that, if the currently installed license for Office XP is the one they were using, they too were using nongenuine installations of Office.

If you purchased Office XP Pro with Front Page thinking you were buying genuine retail Office Professional for consumers with a permanent license, please return the software to the place of purchase for replacement or a full refund.

  • Thanks for your reply Dan,

The computer I bought is what in Sweden is called (free translation) rental buy. You rent the computer from your employer and the rate is withdrawn from your salary before tax. After two or three years you can buy the computer for a small sum.

The computer I bought had pre installed Office 2000.

Some months ago my computer got very slow. I have used desk clean and defragmented the hard drive without success.

Can a not genuine Office slow down the computer?

I am thinking of switching to OpenOffice instead. Would that be something to recommend?

  • Hello Sissor Valley,

If you follow the prompts that the OGA Notification Utility is showing you, it will eventualy present you with the option to purchase one of three different editions of Microsoft Office 2007 at discounted prices.

Of course :-) IMO that would be the best choice! LOL

However, IMHO it would be preferable for you to uninstall the nongenuine Office and use a third party product such as Google Docs or Open Office rather than use nongenuine Microsoft software.
