Excel and Word Shared Files Open "Read-Only" When Accessing Remotely RRS feed

  • Question

  • When accessing my shared Excel and Word files remotely, they always open "read-only". Accordingly, if I want to make any changes, I must save them under a different name.  However, when I copied and pasted the files into the shared folders, they were NOT in read-only form.  Is there some type of setting causing this?  My laptop is running XP Service Pack 2 if that matters.  Help.

You cannot change files through the Remote Access website (you can only upload/download them).  You need to download your file to your local PC, make your changes, then upload it back to your server.

  • Thanks for your reply. I mean no disrespect and I do appreciate your help, but I do question what good remote access is on this product if a user lacks the option of easily  changing a file and saving it again in the shared file folder. I know I can save a copy of the file, but even then it wants it to save it in a temporary folder or I must save it to my desktop and subsequently upload it (under a different name) back to the shared folders. When I'm working from home, I want to access my files saved in a shared folder on the Home Server on another PC back at my office.  I thought Home Server would allow me to do this. Does this mean I now must also go out and get "Go To My PC" and overlay that with my current setup?  Again, I thought that Home Server would allow me to not only access but also make changes to files while working remotely from home WITHOUT using "Go To My PC".  Is that my best option?  Thanks again for your help.

  • I believe the Microsoft vision for the shares on the Remote Access web site wasn't a "teleworker" focus. The idea was that you could download a file that you need from your server, not that you could edit it in place on your server from afar. (The ability to edit from afar is actually a fairly sophisticated bit of functionality...) The ability to edit from afar is probably seen as more of a business requirement; home users are probably expected to want to be able to download a copy of the cute video of the kids running through the sprinklers when they were three years old, or for your kid (or your kid's teacher) to be able to download the homework they "forgot" to bring in.

That said, if you think this is an important feature (and I think you do think so) you should submit a product suggestion on Connect, after searching for similar ones (there are probably a few).
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks for clarifying. At least I know I'm not missing anything in terms of settings or how I'm uploading the files etc.

The other option (if you have a business OS at home, such as XP Pro, Vista Business, or 7 Pro) would be to use Remote Desktop to get into those clients, then edit your work from that desktop.
