Office 97 on Win XP / Validation incompletion

Question
-
I run Office 97 on Windows XP Tablet. When I run the validation program it does not complete giving the following possible reasons:
- The version of Office installed on this PC is earlier than Office XP.
- There are currently no Office applications installed on this PC.
- The version of Office you are using is hosted on another computer or a terminal server. Read more about this in the FAQ.
The 2nd and 3rd reasons are wrong.
So, I am wondering about what would happen if I purchased Office 2007 update. Would it refuse to load? Any ideas?
If I run the diagnostic tool I get:

Nigel,
The validation program isn't available for Office 97. Can you please tell me what your trying to do? Are you trying to download a template? If so, please send post the link of the item you are attempting to download so we can tell you which version this will work for.
Your question:

Thanks for your response. The issue is that I don't want to buy an 'upgrade' if it is going to refuse to load. My copy of Office 97 is valid but 'fails' validation (or rather does not complete validation) and that puts some doubt in my mind. However, if the validation tool doesn't work with Office 97 I should be OK. Thanks,Tuesday, March 13, 2007 5:43 AM
