The windows Media Connect Service is not Running

Question
-
Just got this appearing in my network health with an at risk status, I am aware that the service is used to stream to window programmes like media player and xbox 360 but I have been using Tversity on the server until now with no problems... The only thing I can think that may have caused it is the last update of Tversity.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem or if I have to reinstall how is best to go about this as I have WHS installed on the server's 160 Gb drive and then installed another 750 Gb drive which is about half full of music and photos I just can't lose.......
Cheers for any help anyone can give.....Saturday, April 18, 2009 5:38 PM

Have you tried rebooting the server? If that doesn't help, you can logon to the server desktop and try starting the service (Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > expand Services and Applications > click Services > right click Windows Media Connect Service > click Start).

The error indicates that one or more services that the Media Connect uses are not working properly. According to the service properties it depends on the HTTP, HTTP SSL and Plug and Play Device host services.
Can you check that these three services are running, and if not check if they are disabled or giving any error when you try to start them?
(The HTTP service is probably the one called World Wide Web Publishing Service)

Hi kariya,
Thanks for the reply, I have tried rebooting the server and also turning off the sharing of all folders in the setting on the WHS console and then rebooting but when you try sharing the folders again the media connect stops working...
On trying to start the service as you described then there is a box which comes up which states "Could not start Windows Media Connect Service on local computer - Error 1068 The dependency service or group failed to start.
Any other idea's ?Saturday, April 18, 2009 8:00 PM -

Just opened services on the server and managed to start running the above mentioned services as they were disabled.... Hopefully they will still start automatically when the server restarts tomorow...
Network health back to normal at least for now!!
I wonder why they ended up disabled....??Saturday, April 18, 2009 9:22 PM -
I have no idea why they were disabled, they are a vital part of whs console functions. To make them start at reboot you must set startup mode to automatic om the mentioned services.

I have no idea why they were disabled ...
Tversity has a built-in web server, I believe. Does it disable IIS if present?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)Sunday, April 19, 2009 1:27 PMModerator -
