Upgrading from HPC 2008 (NOT R2), to something newer.

    Question

  • Embarrassingly enough the organisation I work for  are still running HPC 2008 (not even R2).

They are now looking to upgrade to a newer version. Probably 2012R2 as our underlying hardware (HP BL460 G6) wont support 2016.

I am having real trouble trying to find any information/documentation on upgrading from 2008.

Can anybody advise me on what my options are? Is it possible to upgrade from 2008 straight to 2012R2? Would we need to update to 2008R2 first? Is there no upgrade path and the best method would be to rebuild from scratch?

    Appreciate and and all help.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Upgrading from HPC Pack 2008 to HPC Pack 2012 R2 Update 3 requires lots of upgrades and really easy to fail, it includes:

Upgrade to HPC Pack 2008 R2 (refer to https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff872108(v=ws.10).aspx)

    1. First windows system upgrade from Server 2008 to Server 2008 R2

    2. SQL upgrade

    3. Upgrade HPC Pack

    4. etc

Then upgrade to HPC Pack 2012, for this, you have to do migration, please refer to https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj945407(v=ws.11).aspx

then you patching all the way to HPC Pack 2012 R2 Update 3

I would recommend you do a new installation of HPC Pack 2012 R2 Update 3 (and applying QFEs), and moving workloads to the new cluster.

  • Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking that would probably be the case, but there seemed so little documentation out there that I just wanted to be sure.

    Appreciate your assistance.

    New installation it is.
