Installing XP on a second computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an upgrade version of xp that i bought to replace the win98 version that I was using on my home computer.  Ireceived have a second computer that needed a new hard drive that I installed. When trying to use my upgrade version of xp in the new machine it started loading then told me to insert the disc that i had before the xp.  I no longer have that win98 disc and want to know if there is any way to have the new hard drive recognise the upgrade disc?  I do not feel that I should have to buy a second xp to add acomputer to my home LAN.

  • Hello compnewbie,

That sticker is telling us that this Compaq computer has an OEM license for Windows XP Home from Compaq (HP).  To take advantage of this fact, we just need the right discs to install the right kind of Windows.

Here's the link to follow to order a set of Recovery Discs from Compaq/HP:  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=457547&lang=en  then look for "CD-ROM order page - Recovery Disc"

As long as the original motherboard was not replaced with a non-factory motherboard, the Recovery CDs will put back the original installation of XP Home using the License that is represented by the CoA affixed to the computer.  Once installed and activated, visit www.microsoft.com/genuine, click Validate Windows, and your XP Home installation on your second computer will be 100% Genuine.

  • Hello compnewbie,

Windows Operating Systems licenses sold to consumers specify that each license can be installed and activated on ONLY ONE computer at a time.  Some licenses (OEM) specify that the license can never be moved from the computer onto which the license is first installed to any other computer.

So, if you have a second computer, you need to purchase a second license for that second computer.

If the second computer is a used computer from a name brand manufacturer, it's possible that it is already licensed to run Windows.  Does it have a Certificate of Authenticity affixed to the computer?  If so, which version and edition of Windows is listed on the CoA?  (PS--Don't post the full product key printed on the CoA).  If from a name brand manufacturer, which one?
