Vista Basic Theme?

Question
-
I understand from the known issues that Aero thunks down into Vista Basic mode when an active Remote Desktop session is active, but on Vista Ult64, I'm getting Basic mode as soon as I start the client, even though I have no active RD sessions. Is this expected behavior or a bug? (Note I do have VirtualPC running at the same time, could that affect things as well?)Wednesday, April 23, 2008 8:23 PM

Thanks for the info! Can you update your video card drivers and see if it repros?
If it does, could you please report a bug?
- Go to http://connect.microsoft.com
- Sign in and then select Live Mesh Tech Preview on Your Dashboard
- Click Feedback and follow the instructions for collecting your logs and then submit a bug
Note: you will have to submit a bug first, then edit it to attach your logs.

Yes, I had this same issue. The solution is to run the Windows Experience Index again, this re-enabled Aero for me.

Hi All,
Thanks for trying out Live Mesh! We are working on some issues around this, but to make sure we have our bases covered, can you please let us know the following:
1) What video cards you have
2) Whether or not you installed the Live Mesh Remote Desktop Enhancements (if you elevated during install and continued, you did)
3) Whether or not your system reboots into this state
We really appreciate your feedback and help.
Thanks,
Todd

Hello, Todd.
Just added my primary desktop to me mesh and encountered this. I followed Cullen's advice and the Aero scheme returned upon running the Experience Index rater.
1. Nvidea GeForce 8500GT
2. Yes, I installed the Remote Desktop Enhancements and it elevated via UAC to allow this.
3. I'll let you know if it stays Aero on a reboot and resume from sleep - I assume it will.
This is my 2nd Vista install to my mesh and the first didn't encounter this.

I'm not at that PC, but I believe I have the latest offered signed drivers for that card via Windows Update. I'll confirm this evening.

Same issue with my MS work laptop, and 3 home machines. ATI and NVIDIA cards, Dell, Lenovo and HP machines. All video drivers are up todate. A reboot resolves the problem as well. Client installed.Friday, May 16, 2008 2:00 AM

I also had this problem, but running WEI again fixed it.
1. Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT
2. Remote Desktop Enhancements were installed
3. Didn't reboot since running WEI fixed it. If it comes back I'll post again.Sunday, June 8, 2008 2:16 AM -
I just wanted to say that running WEI didn't work in my case. Even after restarting and logging out and then logging back in, Vista 32 SP1 would default to its Basic theme with no option of getting back to Aero. In the end what I did was follow TweakVista's recommendations (link) on forcing Aero to run via registry edits.
Per Todd's request:
1. nvidia 8800GTS 320mb (Forceware 175.19)
2. I installed the enhancements after running the installer. As trying to run the installer itself in an elevated state caused the install to fail with a network connection error.
3. System did reboot into the Aero Basic state. After editing the registry system rebooted with Aero enabled.
So if running WEI doesn't work in getting your Aero back, try making a quick edit to the registry and restarting the DWM service.- Edited by Solar257 Friday, July 18, 2008 5:20 AM details
