SyncToy2.0 - Exception during run: The FileSyncProvider received an unexpected error while writing a change. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've got SyncToy1.4 running on one computer and love it. I installed SyncToy2.0 on my wife's computer, with the intent of Echoing files to her external hard drive. The two computers and external hard drives are completely separate, so there's no file overlaps between the two SyncToy programs.

When I set up her SyncToy, I initially Synchronized files from her computer to the external drive. That seemed to work fine. The files are visible and readable on the external drive. From there, I want to Echo any changes on her computer to the external drive. Everytime I try to do that, I get an error message: "Exception during run: The FileSyncProvider received an unexpected error while writing a change."

I've tried deleting uninstalling and reinstalling SyncToy, I've deleted the files on the external drive and started over, nothing works. Her computer is running XP Pro SP3.

    Help! Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • To close out this thread, I was able to resolve the problem. The computer uses an NTFS file system, the external hard drive was FAT32. I reformatted the external HD to NTFS, and now SyncToy is working fine. Don't know for sure whether the inconsistency between the file systems was the problem or whether simply reformatting the drive fixed the problem. Regardless, life is good....

  • Re-Formatting the external drive is not needed to resolve this.  In the above case, there might have been a prob. between NTFS and FAT32 but I got this error with both NTFS drives.  I resolved my issue by deleting the pair set up in SyncToy and then re-setup the pair.  Apparently the SyncToy_*.dat file got corrupted.
