OneCare has encountered a problem and may not be protecting this computer.

I have checked the Help Center and the forums and cannot find a solution.

    Can anyone help me?

  • I get the red 'alert' icon on my WLOC 2.0.2500.12 hub machine after one of the 'slave' machines had a competing anti-virus program installed.

Once the AVG anti-virus Free Edition was removed from the slave machine, that machine now shows up with a 'fair' rating (since it's backed up, but not via WLOC).  But, no matter what I do (reboots, etc) the HUB machine still shows a RED ICON, and lists the slave machine as having an "urgent" issue - instructs me to "remove interfering programs".

AVG was removed two days ago.
Q: Will I need to remove WLOC and re-install to get it to sync up with reality properly?
Any ideas?  [too bad they no longer have STE's at the Squish]

You should not need to reinstall OneCare on the slave machine, but if the Hub is not showing the updated status of the slave, then there's a communication problem. You can try the reinstall route or contact support.

  • The odd part is the hub machine shows the status as of the "red" machine with today's date after rebooting both machines. I tried the support thing, but there are too many "twisty little passages, all alike" in the knowledgebase.  (XYZZY)

  • If you didn't manage to get to the support submission form (get more help/contact support/select trial user if it can't validate your subscription on the first go) then I think trying the option to remove the slave machine from the hub, which will cause the slave to become unsubscribed, and then reinstalling and activating once again, may be worth a try.

  • That worked.

    Steps:
    1) Remove the formerly 'at risk' computer from the HUB machine's OneCare circle.
    2) Re-activate OneCare subscription on the formerly 'at risk' PC.

I hope this helps someone else...

  • Thanks for confirming. Of course, you shouldn't have needed to do this - it sounds like some sort of disconnect in the Hub functionality with monitoring of that PC. (I'll say it....could be a bug!)

  • As a Software Quality Assurance Manager with ~20 years of experience (13 of them at Microsoft), I'd stake my reputation on it - there's a bug there.  Best of luck sorting it out.  I hope I've given you enough details to reproduce in-house.

  • Okay, I'll call it a bug, too.

Why does the support link not help you?

    Christina,

When you open OneCare, what does the banner at the top of the OneCare window, that is shaded in red, say for the reason for your red status? What actions does it indicate you need to take and what have you tried or done?
