WHS Remote Client Display Resolution Issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using WHS to gain remote access to a Windows XP client with a display resolution of 1920 x 1200.  My local Windows XP machine had a monitor with a display resolution of 1600 x 1200, so I could only view that much of the remote client’s display.

I just purchased a new monitor with a display resolution of 1920 x 1200 in order to be able to view the remote client’s entire display.  However, I still get only 1600 x 1200 of the remote display with black side bars on my local display, even though I select full resolution when connecting to the remote computer through WHS.

What do I need to change and on which machine in order to see the entire client display on my local display?

  • Make sure you're using Terminal Services client version 6 or greater on your local windows XP machine. Older versions only support up to 1600x1200.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I'm running WinXP SP3 with RDP 6.1 support.  Does that mean I'm using TS Client v6?  How do I tell which version of TS Client I'm running.  Thanks for your help.

Open RDC, right click on the title bar and select About.

  • OK, so now I see that RDC is another name for Terminal Services Client.  The about box says:
    Shell Version 6.0.6001
    Control Version 6.0.6001
    RDP 6.1 supported

Under Options - Display - Remote desktop size, I have tried 1920 x 1200 and fullscreen; however, I still only see 1600 x 1200 of the remote display, which is 1920 x 1200.

    Any other suggestions?  Thx.

  • There is an optional update for Windows Home Server to support this I think:

No, installing that update is definitely not supported (since it requires logging into the server desktop).  Besides, that is one of the Software, Optional updates that can be installed via Microsoft Update (the same Software, Optional updates that sometimes break WHS functionality).

  • Both my remote client and local PC are running WinXP SP3 and have all of the latest Windows updates installed.  Our WHS system was deployed in October 2008 and it has all of the updates installed also.  It seems as though there is something on one of these three systems that is remembering that I had a 1600 x 1200 monitor connected before and is using that as "full resolution", rather than 1920 x 1200.

Are there registry settings that store this information or is it contained in a file somewhere?

Is this the correct forum to be posting this question to and does anyone know of another forum that might be better suited to answer this question?  Thx.
