Answered by:
optional update delivery is not working - windows 7 is not genuine

Question
-
begin rant:
So I've had Windows 7 Ultimate installed for about a year now on my machine, the OS was purchased from the Microsoft website, it cost a little over 300 USD which, in my opinion is highly overpriced, 170-190 would be a lot more reasonable. Today, I come back to my machine to see a dialogue stating the windows 7 optional update delivery is not working, so my windows now has "This copy of Windows is not genuine" when that is complete bs, my copy of windows had surely be genuine as I bought it directly from Microsoft. Unless Microsoft is counterfeiting their own software? I've already switched almost all my workstations to Ubuntu or Kubuntu, leaving windows on this machine, I specifically switched because of the cost and annoyance of the license/license agreement to install windows on one machine (For 300 USD, on one machine, that's ridiculous) But I abide by that rule, regardless of how ridiculous it is. And now, this pops up in my face to break down my trust, and faith in Microsoft even more.
Microsoft Windows used to be the only OS I thought was worth anything, I got past the BSoD of early versions and I got past the need to install drivers for everything I plugged in before it worked at all (often using Dos to install them) I have always respected Microsoft and enjoyed Windows, but this is just annoyingly pointless to tell a genuine customer that their software is counterfeit after they paid such a ridiculous price for it. From what I know, the windows that isn't genuine bypasses the genuine detection anyways, so all this is doing is hurting the legitimate consumer.
/end rant ; I woke in quite a mood today so apologies for the lengthy rant, now please, how do I fix this? Thank you.

Please read the top sticky on this forum page, titled "Please Read Before Posting," and post your MGADiag report as instructed.

I read it, also, isn't there just a tool I can download that removes the notice at the bottom of the screen, and the dialogue popups? I am not going through a big hassle for this, if I have to do anything more than download a tool then every workstation is about to be ubuntu linux.Saturday, May 26, 2012 7:16 PM

3 people i know online all report the same error happening today, this is not my problem. Microsoft needs to fix it, or I'm done with it.Saturday, May 26, 2012 8:08 PM

Follow Colin's advice. It is impossible to diagnose your problem if you refuse to post a diagnostic report.
MGA Diagnostic Report:
To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once downloaded, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.
Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post.
Please state the version and edition of windows from your COA. do not state the product key.

If i paste that information it will reveal personal information. I am not going to post personal information on a public website. I will just use a pirated copy of Windows, being how I own the legit key anyways, it will make things easier for me as I won't have this problem in the future.Saturday, May 26, 2012 9:06 PM

It is not possible for anyone to retreive personal info from an MGADiag report. It is designed to prevent that. Even the first two fields of the product key are masked to protect you. If you want our help post the unedited report. Once you run the tool the report is printed to your clipboard. Just use Cntl-V to paste it into your reply.

Your Windows is licensed. There does not appear to be any problems. Was the non-genuine message showing at the time you ran the report? Some minor issues are resolved just by running the MGADiag tool. Other problems can cause an intermittent appearance of the non-genuine notice. Those are usually software conflicts that cause the Windows Activation Technology to be temporarily blocked at a time when it does a periodic check.

When I ran the genuine advantage tool it fixed the error, the message at the corner stating it's not genuine went away, then suddenly my desktop background went away about an hour later, and it has the message again "This copy of windows is not genuine" it also popped up a message Reinstall Windows, there has been a change to windows so it needs to be reinstalled.
I've not download any programs or visit any untrusted websites, there are no suspicious programs running in the background and no suspicious services, no viruses detected and no suspicious network activity. I think it's just going crazy, so I'm going to do what the message said, re-install windows and see if it helps. Sorry for my aggravation/tone earlier, today wasn't so good for me.

I am going to defer to Noel Paton to analyse this error. It appears to relate to remote services. Noel is in the UK so he will probably not respond for several hours. In the meantime see if you can isolate the cause to third party programs. Do a Clean Startup and see if the error still appears. It may take a little time to be sure if it does not immediately appear. Read the KB article to understand the Clean Startup strategy.

Thanks Colin ;)The 0xC004F012 error is a fairly generic one - and can mean that a number of problems have been found. As Colin says, try a Clean Boot and see if that remove the notification. If so, then at least we know that the problem is in installed software, rather than a problem with the OS itself. While in Clean Boot, please attempt Validation - it may point up any problems - and post a new MGADiag report.
