Windows XP ask for reactivation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Everything was fine until today my second harddisk breakdown...

When i restart my computer, it said that my hardware have been change and have to reactivate the windows. Therefore I use my CD key to activate, I was told that the key have been used for activate once and ask me to enter new key. And the worst thing is I just left 3 days to reactivate.

My question is, is it microsoft not allow their user computer to failed? Is it mean when your hardware failed, you must buy a new copy of windows?

I was dissapointed with MS and hope they will improve the WGA and solve my problem.

  • On your PC where it asks you to validate windows there should be an option for Telephone activation. Select that and call the number, you will have to answer some questions to validate you have a genuine copy of windows, and then your cd key will be unlocked.

  • Hello Anonymous,

Product Activation is Not the same as Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) Validation.

Product Activation: is required when you first install, reinstall or there has been a significant change to the computer's hardware.

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation: Is only required to access the Windows Update site or to download some items from the Microsoft Download site. (Note: Critical Updates are available thru the Automatic Update service without the need for Validation.

You are permitted to reinstall and activate XP as many times as you want to, as long as your use of XP maintains compliance with the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA).

After a certain number of activations within a certain time period, automatic online activation will be suspended, which will require that you do a Telephone Activation.

Start the Activation Wizard by following this clickpath:  Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Activate Windows.  (If for some reason the menu entry is missing:  Start>Run, type oobe/msoobe.exe /a and click OK.)  Choose Activate Windows by Telephone and follow the prompts.  If the automated telephone activation is not accepted, you will be offered the option to speak with a live activation representative.  Choose that option.  The rep will ask a few questions for the purpose of confirming that you are still using your license for XP in accordance with the EULA.  If so, the rep will issue an activation code for you to enter into the Activation Wizard.
