  • So I am getting the error for validation and when I run the diagnostic tool, it shows the product key but it is a different product key from the product key COA sticker on the bottom of my laptop.  Any ideas or do I have to call??

Your Windows XP License is a Volume License - such licenses are only issued in bulk and cannot be resold.
If it has a COA sticker attached to the case, for what version and edition of Windows is it valid? Does the Key on it match what you can see in the report above?

If the Sticker is for XP Pro then you should be able to change the Key using the Product Key Update Tool
If it's for either Media Center, or Home, then you will have to reinstall using the Manufacturer's Recovery disks, or an OEM System Builder disk for the appropriate OS

  • And I have tried to change the product key by doing the "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoob.exe /a" and when I put in the product key from my COA sticker, it says its an unathorized license.

  • The COA sticker is for Windows XP Pro, which is the disc I have for it.  The key however, does not match what is listed above, the key that the COA sticker has ends in "8G3G8" and the reports is showing a key that ends with "6X3P3".  I will try and see what I can do witht eh Product Key Update Tool.  When I try to acctivate, it states that it is already activated, so I do the change in registry to the OOBETImer code, and redo the activation using the %SystemRoot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a   and then it states that the key is unauthorized or is invaled. and will not allow me to continue with updates.  The HDD was reformatted and the disc is a windows xp pro SP2 disc.

  • THANK YOU NOEL!!! The Product Key Update Tool worked!! I tried using winkeyfinder or whatever it is called, and it would not allow me to change the product key, but this however, successfully changed the product key and I am now able to receive updates. Thank you again!
