  • Question

  • Has anyone received satisfactory assistance on fixing the problem with validation of Vista after it shows up as Not Genuine.  I have opened a trouble ticket and after the first response to my reply that I have activated numerous times and the validation tools still shows that it can't verify because Vista is not activated while the software  shows as activated.

The initial response was to activate by changing to the same product key which worked for activation but failed to validate.  All this was done with no software other than Microsoft loading (Clean Boot).  Then the next step was to  activate by phone and then validate.  When I replied to support that these steps had failed to fix the problem, the initial ticket was closed as unresolved and I was referred to the OS support with a new ticket and went through a complete upgrade of the Vista install over the existing install.  All during the reinstall, the system shows up as Not Genuine.  After spending the two hours (The reinstallation was much slower than the initial install), the result was the same.  I have activated so many times that I have portions of the keys memorized.

I sent back a reply that this had failed and then opened a thread here.  After two day, there has been no response to the thread here and my contact at Microsoft has failed to answer the initial reply, a followup and an additional followup.

I have researched this problem and it seems that Microsoft has a canned script to follow and if that fails, then there doesn't seem to be a folllowup response.  I am not sure that Microsoft even knows what is causing this problem and how to fix it.  Recommending that the software be activated over and over again seems to be the suggested fix and that is definitely not working.

Sorry for the delay in response.

Please try phone activating and speak with a customer service representative when you're given the option. You can get started with phone activation by typing "slui.exe 4" in the search field in the Start Menu and pressing Enter.

Please click “Validate Windows” here: www.microsoft.com/genuine and follow the prompts.

This should resolve this issue for you.

  • I finally found a solution after my problem was sent to an escalation engineer who suggested that the initial key information was damaged in the database.  This was after initial troubleshooting with a validation specialist failed and  the problem was transferred to an OS specialist.  After reinstallations, reactivations and complete reinstallations of the OS (Very time consuming), the problem was sent to an escalation engineer.  After another full install and failure, I was provided with a phone number for support.  After being referred to another activation specialist and failure, I was forwarded to another support engineer.  After a conference call and yet another verification that I had a legal and GENUINE Microsoft product,  I was finally provided with a new product key.  Installation of the new key allowed activation and validation.  My OS was finally validated as genuine.  This problem started on 6 July and I opened the initial case on 7 July.  I finally got the problem fixed on 20 July so it took two weeks to get legal software validated as genuine so it was useable.  In addition I spent numerous hours on reinstallations including a full format and reinstall on a previously operational computer.  I know that Microsoft says that there have few if any false positives but as one of the FEW, I have been forced to jump through hoops for two weeks to get the Not Genuine banner removed and to reenable the software features.

As a professional network engineer, I earn my living fixing problems but if this problem (False Positives) is not fixed by Microsoft, I forsee a public relations nightmare brewing.  Paying customers are not going to accept being called thieves by Microsoft - especially when the problem is caused by as glitch (Bug) in the validation engine.

  • Please post the results of this diagnostics tool:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012  That’ll help me understand why you’re unable to validate.  Also, can you tell me what error code you get when you try to validate?  It’ll be gray and in brackets at the end of the message on the validation failure web page.

  • Here is the information from my post from two days ago.  There hasn't been any response to the post.

Windows must be activated before validation can determine if this copy of Windows is genuine.--[0xC004C4A6]

I have opened an email problem --Microsoft IncidentRX1038985650.  I have internet activated in clean boot, numerous times by phone and still get the above error and although the properties show as authenticated, the validation fails because of authentication.  The original incident was closed as unresolved and reopened as a Vista problem--Microsoft Support: SRX1039061935.   I have just spent 2.5+ hours reinstalling Vista as a clean upgrade, performed a telephone activation and again failed validation with the identical error.  I have telephone authenticated so many times, I have some of the numbers memorized.

I need to find a solution as this software cames directly from Muduslink as an Vista Express upgrade and was authenticated anbd validated until I replaced the hard drive.

  • Upon the recommendation of Microsoft support, I did a clean install and upgrade.  After telephone activation, the status showed as activated and genuine.  I went to the WGA page and performed the validation test.  Again, it failed with "Windows must be activated before validation can determine if this copy of Windows is genuine.--[0xC004C4A6] "  although Windows is activated.  I reformatted, installed XP Pro and upgraded to Vista Business.  Used the automated activation and the status was Activated and Genuine.  Went back to the WGA page and validated.  POOF - Not Genuine with the identical error.  Once the WGA Active X has installed, the OS is flagged as Not Genuine and no reload, reinstall or reactivation will allow validated to pass.  The only way to clear the Not Genuine status is a wipe clean and install.  But if validation is required and run, then the problem starts over.  This copy of Vista Business was received directly from Moduslink as part of the express upgrade from XP Pro and had been running successfully until I swapped a hard drive and it came up as requiring activation.  I was not able to activate using the internet so I used the phone method.  All was well (activated and genuine) until I went to the WGA site and ran the validation.  It looks like once the WGA application runs, it basically wipes out the genuine status and so far, there hasn't been a fix provided.  I have spent countless hours reactivating, reinstalling and researching and all I have accomplished is getting more frustrated.  Now I understand that this problem is going to be added to the volume license version of Vista and Server 2008.  I can't imagine running one of my critical patient care applications on a server than can be disabled due to a bug in an antitheft program.

I have opened a new support request - 1039380571 - requesting assistance with resolving this problem.
