A list of entries that contain Finnish characters is not sorted as expected RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have installed CRM with english as base language and then added finnish. Now we a problem when listing entries. In the bottom of the CRM screen there are quick links to entries with different starting letters (All, #, A, ...). The problem is that there is no finnish characters (å, ä, ö). Allthough we have the version 4.0 of CRM, could the problem be this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927206
In our environment there is Latin1_General_CI_AI as the collation of X_MSCRM database but Finnish_Swedish_CI_AI as the collation of MSCRM_CONFIG database. Should we change the collation of X_MSCRM database to Finnish_Swedish_CI_AI? How dangerous the change can be? :)

  • Hi Pauli,
Collation for Organization DB and Configuration DB should be the same. So in your situation I will backup Organization DB reinstall MSCRM with a right collation and default language and later import Organization DB with changing collation.

The best aproach will be to contact with Microsoft and ask for suggested solution.

  • I don't know if you will have issues if you attempt to change the SQL database collation of a table.  I suggest obtaining the services of a SQL database administrator or opening a ticket with Microsoft support to obtain their recommendation.

Here are a few articles on the subject.   Hopefully this will point you in the right direction. You could create a dev environment and try it if you don't want to ask a dba or open a support ticket.  However, the change may leave your CRM implementation in an unsupported condition.

  • Our SQL Server is version 2005 Enterprise so the changing of collation can be quite an easy operation (I am not sure yet). Anyway, the bigger problem is the CRM itself, because I have not found any documents about changing collation in CRM 4.0 so I have quite a bad feeling, what can happen. Collation change was supported in version 3.0 but if it's not supported in the version 4.0, we are not sure what to do. We have a test environment, so maybe we have to try and see what happens. Still, if that is not a supported change, changing the production environment is not the first thing in our minds... Any other ideas, how to get rid of the problem?

  • It seems that the collation is not the cause for our problems. We have tried to install CRM several times and now it seems that the problem is how the CRM is installed. In our test environment Finnish characters seems ok if the Finnish version is installed first and then the English language pack. Still our supplier says that they have always installed English version first and then the Finnish version and they have not have any problems with the Finnish characters. This is so strange...

Are the language packs only translations to the original installed CRM or should they import also special characters and functions to CRM? Now it seems that the language packs only imports exact translations but does not import any special functions etc. related to the language imported.

For now, it seems that the only possible solution is to reinstall CRM as Finnish and then add the English language pack and import data from the current production environment to the new one. I am not keen on the idea so if anybody have some other solution, I would appreciate that. :)

  • Another question related to this problem:
Can we use these instructions to "move" data from old production environment to a new one: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/952934
Especially this is interesting: "Redeploy the Microsoft Dynamics CRM deployment that includes the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server within the same domain or to another domain." It would be nice to hear if that can be used at the same time as the base language is changed in CRM when moving database to a new environment...
